Democrats were waiting for the other shoe to drop in the criminal trials of Donald Trump.
The left’s long-hoped-for day finally arrived.
And Fani Willis dropped one bombshell on Donald Trump that had Democrats jumping for joy.
As part of the politically motivated RICO indictment against Donald Trump and 18 other co-defendants for contesting the 2020 election, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump lawyer Sidney Powell with seven felonies.
Days before her trial was to start Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to commit intentional interference with performance of election duties.
As a result, Powell received six years’ probation, a $6,000 fine, was forced to pay $2,700 in restitution and write a letter of apology to the state.
Left-wing legal analysts like CNN’s Elie Honig pronounced this a massive win for Willis and doom for Trump.
“This is a major breakthrough for prosecutors, potentially a devastating development for Donald Trump, because what’s going to happen now is Sidney Powell is going to testify for prosecutors in Georgia, and presumably she’ll also be prepared to testify for Jack Smith in his federal case in Washington, D.C. She’s not indicted in that case, but she’s listed as a co-conspirator in that case. She’s going to be able to provide insider information that could be really devastating towards Donald Trump,” Honig told host John Berman.
Honig claimed Powell’s guilty plea – which included a promise to testify at trial – gave Willis a narrator to the process by which Trump and his attorneys planned to contest the 2020 election in Georgia.
“And John, really importantly, in order to take this plea in this deal, Sidney Powell is going to have to acknowledge what we did was criminal. It was illegal, it was a crime. And so that’s going to lend a lot of credibility, I think, obviously, to prosecutors’ assertions that what Donald Trump did was knowingly a crime, was an intentional crime,” Honig continued.
“So now they’ve sort of got an ultimate insider, somebody who has remained steadfastly loyal to Donald Trump, to the stolen election narrative. Now she has flipped. Now she has come clean. Now she’s going to be a prosecution witness,” Honig added.
But just like in the Russia collusion hoax, the plea deal was less than meets the eye.
In the Russia collusion witch hunt, the press would often tout Mueller tripping up Trump associates in process crimes as a sign the investigation continued to draw near to Trump.
However, Mueller never charged anyone for conspiring with the Russians which was a sure sign the investigation was a bust.
The Washington Examiner’s Byron York noticed a similar set of facts in the Powell deal as Willis charged Powell with participation in a felonious conspiracy to steal the election, yet Willis allowed Powell to plead guilty to minor charges that carried no jail time.
“For you lawyers out there: Wasn’t Sidney Powell charged with taking part in the super-duper grand conspiracy that Fani Willis alleged in the Trump election indictment? A felony, of course. And now Willis drops the super-duper grand conspiracy charge against an alleged key player?” York posted on social media.
And that was exactly the case as Willis overcharged the defendants in a sweeping indictment designed to cause negative headlines to hurt Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
When the rubber met the road Willis didn’t even force Powell to plead guilty to the racketeering charges which means Willis passed on the easiest chance she had to have a Trump lawyer stand up in court and say there was a criminal conspiracy to steal the election.
Willis couldn’t compel Powell to do so because there was no such criminal conspiracy in the first place and Willis knew it.
