Democrat Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis never thought she would end up here.
Willis is now the one sweating bullets.
And that’s because Fani Willis got the bad news about the smoking gun that may send her to jail.
Fani Willis and Nathan Wade are skating on thin ice.
That’s because defense lawyers in Willis’ RICO case against Donald Trump and 18 other co-defendants produced evidence that undercut testimony by Willis and Nathan Wade that the two began their affair after Willis hired Wade as the special prosecutor in the 2020 election criminal investigation.
Judge Scott McAfee is weighing a motion by Trump co-defendant Michael Roman to disqualify Willis – and by extension her entire office – based on the allegations Willis hired her lover to work the Trump case so the two could reap the financial rewards of the appointment.
Willis testified that not only did the relationship not begin until 2022, but that Wade never spent the night at her condo.
Defense lawyers produced cellphone data showing Wade traveling at night to the area where Willis lived and remaining there until morning.
The motion read that “on September 11, 2021, Mr. Wade’s phone left the Doraville area and arrived within the geofence located on the Dogwood address at 10:45 P.M. The phone remained there until September 12 at 3:28 A.M. at which time the phone traveled directly to towers located in East Cobb…”
“November 29, 2021, Mr. Wade’s phone was pinging on the East Cobb towers near his residence and, following a call from Ms. Willis at 11:32 P.M., while the call continued, his phone left the East Cobb area just after midnight and arrived within the geofence located on the Dogwood address at 12:43 A.M on November 30, 2021. The phone remained there until 4:55 A.M.,” the filing added.
The motion also reported that phone records showed “over 2,000 voice calls and just under 12,000 text messages” Willis and Wade exchanged over an 11-month period in 2021 with the “prevalence of calls made in the evening hours.”
The evidence led many observers to note that Willis would be lucky to only escape with Judge McAfee disqualifying her from this case.
There is an argument to be made that Willis provided false testimony while under oath on the witness stand which could lead to professional sanctions from the state bar association and potentially a criminal investigation on perjury charges.
Fani Willis thought she could make herself a star by prosecuting Donald Trump.
The political fame derived from this sham prosecution could set Willis up for a run for governor in 2026.
But now Willis’ case and reputation lie in tatters and the discussion is turning to the level of consequences she may face.
