Donald Trump is the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is Trump’s top competition.
And Donald Trump just made one major 2024 announcement about Ron DeSantis.
Polls show that anywhere from 70 to 80 percent of Republican voters approve of Donald Trump as well as Ron DeSantis.
Many Trump supporters would like to see a Trump/DeSantis ticket in 2024.
But that is not feasible for multiple reasons.
Donald Trump made that clear in an interview with Newsmax where he rejected the idea of running with DeSantis as his running mate.
“No, I think that would be a very unlikely alliance,” Trump told Newsmax. “I’ve never thought of it. We have a lot of great people in the Republican Party.”
“You’ve got to be smart, you’ve got to be respected, you’ve got to have a conservative voice and common sense. We’re not talking about conservative, we’re talking about common sense,” Trump added.
Pollster Tony Fabrizio, who worked as Trump’s top pollster in 2016 and 2020, said Trump cared about loyalty and his own gut instinct in picking a running mate, but that beyond those two issues, Trump was wide open with who he could pick as his running mate.
“Once you get past those two issues — loyalty and Trump going more with his gut — Trump has a lot of leeway in who he would pick,” said Fabrizio.
There is no chance Trump will pick Mike Pence again, so who could Trump select?
Fabrizio explained that what Trump is most likely to do is pick someone who will help him with a voting demographic Trump struggles to attract.
“He’s not necessarily looking to balance the ticket geographically, but what he can do is pick to balance gender, race, ethnicity — a lot of different lanes there. It could be everything from a Tim Scott in South Carolina to an Asian American in California, or somebody Hispanic in Texas. There are so many choices and paths. And there’s lots of time to go,” Fabrizio added.
But among the most bandied-about names Trump supporters have serious questions.
Tim Scott — who Fabrizio mentioned by name — is a woke social justice warrior who worked with Democrats on legislation to put Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in charge of police training nationwide.
Scott attacked law enforcement in the wake of George Floyd’s death and negotiated on a bill that would allow liberals to sue police officers into bankruptcy.
Scott also played the race card and identity politics to sink one of Donald Trump’s conservative judicial nominations.
Another name floated is RINO New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.
Stefanik supports amnesty, gun control, and special rights for transgenders so biological males can use the girls’ bathroom.
Another name thrown around is RINO former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
Haley supports Liz Cheney’s foreign policy, opposed legislation banning biological males from women’s bathrooms, and went woke after George Floyd’s death by declaring her support for Black Lives Matter while scolding Americans about how they needed to feel pain after Floyd died.
There are far more attractive options for a running mate like Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds who supports the pro-life cause and opposed Dr. Fauci’s mandates.
If Donald Trump — or Ron DeSantis — wins the GOP nomination, they will have their pick of who they want as their running mate.
And many conservatives hope they will not pick someone associated with the GOP establishment or the pre-Trump Republican Party.
