The dangers of unchecked AI are growing more apparent by the day.
Now all hell is breaking loose.
And Elon Musk said three words that confirmed this AI doomsday scenario.
Anthropic researcher Jason Coxon ignited a firestorm with a viral social media thread announcing he resigned from the company because of the growing dangers of the AI superintelligence models under development.
“These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing,” Coxon posted to X.
Coxon said everyone at the company working on these AI models understood there is a chance AI could develop the capability to cause the apocalypse and wipe out all life on Earth by 2030.
“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt,” Coxon added.
In a stunning move, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay in response and agreed with Coxon and called for a slowdown on all AI development.
“My first concern is that, since roughly this summer, AI has been advancing drastically faster, driven primarily by AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI. This dynamic is called recursive self-improvement, and it is starting to happen across the industry, including at Anthropic, as we and others have described. Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all,” Amodei wrote.
Amodei cited the cyberattack in which rogue AI agents tested by OpenAI breached the AI developer Hugging Face to warn that AI could be as little as six months away from seizing control of the entire internet and destroying the economy before moving on to wiping out human life.
“Given the accelerating rate of AI capability development, it’s my worry that in 6–12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet (potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage), and that the scale of damage would continue to increase from there if AI becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails. It’s also easy to dismiss OAI-HF as the failure of one company, but I believe that would be a mistake. Similar, though less severe, incidents have happened across the industry, including at Anthropic, and I believe it’s incumbent on every frontier AI company to act as if OAI-HF had happened to them,” Amodei added.
In a sign of how serious AI risks are becoming, Amodei’s competitors issued statements of solidarity in slowing down AI research.
“Dario is right,” Elon Musk wrote on X.
In the past, Musk warned there is a 20% chance AI could create a “Terminator scenario” in which it becomes self-aware and brings about Armageddon.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also agreed with Amodei on the need to slow down and develop guardrails around AI.
“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussion we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks,” Altman stated. “Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We’ll have more to share soon.”
