Things aren’t looking good for the Democrats in the next elections.
It’s so bad that one Democrat is looking to jump ship.
A top Democrat just said two jaw-dropping words about leaving the party.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said on Thursday he is thinking “very seriously” about leaving the Democratic Party in order to become an independent.
During an interview with West Virginia radio host Hoppy Kercheval, Manchin said he considered switching due to the fact that the Democratic brand has “become so bad.”
“I’m thinking seriously. For me, I have to have peace of mind, basically. The brand has become so bad — the D brand and R brand. In West Virginia, the D brand because it’s [the] national brand. It’s not the Democrats in West Virginia, it’s the Democrats in Washington.”
“You’ve heard me say a million times I’m not a Washington Democrat,” he said.
Pressed by Kercheval, the host of “Talkline” on West Virginia Metro News, on whether he is truly serious about becoming an independent, Manchin said, “I would think very seriously about that.”
“I’ve been thinking about that for quite some time. I haven’t made any decisions whatsoever on any of my political direction. I want to make sure that my voice is truly an independent voice,” he said. “When I do speak, I want to be able to speak honestly about basically the extremes of the Democrat and Republican Party that’s harming our nation.”
Last December, Manchin said he had “no intention” of leaving the Democratic Party at that time, but indicated he might consider it in the future.
Manchin is facing a hard reelection in 2024 as a Democrat in West Virginia. Manchin will potentially face Governor Jim Justice, who in a hypothetical face-off defeated the incumbent by 22 points.
Manchin has also toyed with the idea of launching a third-party presidential run in 2024.
“No Labels has been moving and pushing very hard the centrist middle. Making commonsense decisions,” Manchin told Fox News host Shannon Bream in June. “People that basically expect us to do our job. And not put the political party ahead of the policy in our great country. That’s what we’ve seen happening. And there’s more noise and more extremism coming from the far left and the far right.”
“It’s always what I’ve believed. I believe that basically that’s where you make the decisions,” he said of the political center. “You listen to the Left and the Right. You make sure that you leave nobody behind. And you listen to the different persuasions that they might have, concerns. But when it comes you’ve got to make common sense.”
