They also both claim to be allies.
And Gavin Newsom blindsided Kamala Harris with one brutal sucker punch.
Gavin Newsom sent shockwaves through the political world when he told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he wouldn’t run for President in 2028 if Kamala Harris entered the race.
“Of course not, why would I?” Newsom said when Tapper asked about the possibility of running against Kamala. “I wouldn’t do that to her, I wouldn’t do that to you, I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time. Who needs that?”
Newsom explained that he and Kamala shared the same donors and supporters, and that running against each other would only destroy them both.
“No, I wouldn’t,” Newsom added. “First of all, electorally, it’s a gift from God for everybody else that can enjoy the hell out of it. Mutuality assured destruction; it serves no greater good.”
But with politicians, it’s always more important to pay attention to what they do as opposed to what they say.
And Gavin Newsom’s actions look like those of a presidential candidate.
Americans are growing worried that unchecked AI development will wipe out tens of millions of jobs or even the human race.
Polls show 81 percent of Americans support AI regulation.
Newsom recently announced his support for calling a special session of the legislature or new executive orders to take further action to create AI guardrails.
“Is there a legislative play? Is there a framework around a special session in that respect? Is there executive action?” Newsom told reporters, explaining that he was exploring if he possessed “authority within existing agencies that have oversight authority based on laws, rules, and regulations.”
“We’re looking across the spectrum,” Newsom added. “We’re looking to see what we can do in the next few weeks — days, weeks, and months.”
Newsom previously signed two AI safety bills after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon came forward with the bombshell revelation that everyone working on AI knew there was a significant chance this technology could bring about mass extinction by 2030.
“The concerns raised in recent incidents reinforce what California has long recognized: artificial intelligence holds extraordinary promise, but it must be developed and deployed with meaningful safeguards to protect the public,” Newsom said when signing these bills.
Newsom described them as a “step forward with robust, national regulations that match the urgency of this moment.”
Gavin Newsom may claim he’s Kamala Harris’ friend and that he would defer to her in 2028.
