Two vacancies may open on the Supreme Court.
Prescient Trump may already be thinking about who he wants to nominate.
And Donald Trump just revealed his next Supreme Court pick, putting jaws on the floor.
The two oldest justices on the Supreme Court are Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Alito and Thomas are also the conservative stalwarts on the court’s 6-3 Republican majority.
It’s widely rumoured that two could retire this year ahead of the midterm election to guarantee that a Republican Senate can confirm two equally rock-ribbed conservatives to replace them.
The potential vacancies may already be weighing on President Trump’s mind as he floated the idea of nominating Texas Senator Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court.
In a speech in Washington promoting his “Trump Accounts” – accounts where the government and private businesses are pledging to invest $1,000 in a savings account for newborn children, Trump began discussing his relationship with Cruz, who was in the audience for the event.
Trump said he now had a good relationship with Cruz, telling the crowd, “You wouldn’t believe that, because we went through a rough campaign together — it was nasty!”
Trump defeated Cruz in the 2016 Presidential primary in a campaign that saw hard feelings.
Cruz personally attacked Trump before the Indiana primary, the contest Trump won that knocked Cruz out of the race and cinched the nomination for Trump.
“This man is a pathological liar; he doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies … in a pattern that is straight out of a psychology textbook, he accuses everyone of lying,” Cruz ranted to reporters.
“Whatever lie he’s telling, at that minute he believes it … the man is utterly amoral,” Cruz added. “Donald is a bully … bullies don’t come from strength, they come from weakness.”
Cruz later refused to endorse Trump during his speech at the Republican National Convention, prompting a cascade of boos from the crowd.
Now, Trump said he gets along “so well” with Cruz, and the two hold joint rallies.
“We get along so well, and everybody — we actually did joint rallies, can you believe it? He wanted to get some of the action, so he’s smart. He said, “Would you do a rally with me?” But we did joint rallies, and the press used to say, “Will you ever start fighting?” I said, “Don’t worry, it’ll come.” He said the same thing, “Don’t worry, it’ll come.” He is a very tough guy, a very brilliant guy,” Trump added.
Trump then went on to praise the Harvard-trained Cruz’s legal acumen and volunteered the idea of naming Cruz to the court, a vote that Trump joked that he would win unanimously.
“But Ted Cruz has one thing: if I ever have problems, it is hard to get people through. He is a brilliant legal mind; he’s a brilliant man. If I nominate him for the United States Supreme Court, I will get 100% of the vote,” Trump stated.
Trump snarkily said that both parties would be glad to see Cruz gone.
“The Democrats will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out and the Republicans will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out, too,” Trump added.
Cruz won the hatred of Democrats and establishment Republicans for leading a 20213 government shutdown to defund Obamacare.
Former Speaker of the House John Boehner ripped Cruz as a “false prophet” and a “jerk.”
But Cruz now enjoys a good relationship with establishment Republicans like Mitch McConnell due to Cruz’s support for the war in Ukraine and a regime change war in Iran.
Many conservatives would be happy to see Cruz on the Supreme Court, as he would be a more reliable vote than the typical Republican legal establishment pick.
