Along with Clarence Thomas, Justice Samuel Alito forms the foundation of the conservative Supreme Court majority.
Now all hell is breaking loose.
And that’s because Samuel Alito dropped one bombshell that terrified Chuck Schumer.
Alito sent shockwaves across Washington in an interview with CBS’s Jan Crawford.
The interview was supposed to focus on Alito promoting his new book, “So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country.”
But the biggest news came when Crawford asked the 76-year-old Alito about his future on the court and whether he considered retirement.
“I thought about it,” Alito replied.
President George W. Bush nominated Alito to the bench in 2006.
Since 2006, Alito has become one of the legendary conservative justices.
In 2022, Alito authored the Dobbs decision, which achieved the 50-year conservative goal of overturning Roe v. Wade.
Alito admitted to Crawford that at this stage of his life, retirement is a decision he ponders every year.
“Well, it’s something I think that somebody at my age has to think about every term,” Alito added.
“But I thought that I could still make a valuable contribution, which is why I became a justice and a judge in the first place. So that was basically it,” Alito continued.
Crawford wondered whether Alito would need to consider retirement in 2027.
“Yeah, I think I have to,” Alito answered.
Crawford then asked if Alito waiting to retire could put his ideological project at risk since Democrats could win the Senate and block Trump from appointing a successor.
Alito claimed he couldn’t think in those terms.
“I think it’s too hard to predict,” Alito replied. “It’s too hard to predict how for anybody, and particularly when you reach a certain age, what your situation will be a year from now, two years from now and so forth.”
“And it’s too hard to predict what the political situation will be and what any president might do with respect to a replacement,” Alito stated.
But just by floating the idea of retirement, Alito could be slyly attempting to influence those very considerations.
2018 was a blue wave year.
Democrats won 40 seats in the House of Representatives.
However, Republicans gained two seats in the United States Senate.
That’s because in October 2018, Democrats launched a smear campaign to derail Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation with Christine Blasey Ford’s hoax sexual assault allegation.
The prospect of Democrats keeping a Supreme Court seat open in hopes of winning the Senate spurred massive GOP base turnout in key Senate races.
Right now, polls show Democrats leading in enough races to seize the majority in the Senate.
Alito floating a retirement trial balloon could replicate the Kavanaugh effect from 2018 and prevent a Schumer takeover in the Senate.
