Primary night in New York City revealed one truth about the Democrat Party – this is now the party of Zorhan Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Socialists in the mold of Ocasio-Cortez and endorsed by Mamdani swept the primaries.
Mamdani went 3-3 in Congressional primaries as former New York City Comptroller Brand Lander routed Congressman Dan Goldman, Big Labor activist Darializa Avila Chevalier ousted Congressman Anthony Espaillat, and State Representative Clare Valdez beat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso in an open-seat race.
Since these primaries all took place in New York, the media capital of the world, they received outsized attention.
CNN’s left-wing commentator Van Jones didn’t mince words and told viewers that these results show the socialists captured his party, and challengers backed by Mamdani defeated establishment-friendly candidates that Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries supported.
“Well, first of all, New York City matters because the two most exciting left-wing candidates are here, AOC and Mamdani. But also, this is the stronghold for the establishment. Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. This is a battle between the establishment and this insurgency,” Jones began.
Jones said Mamdani pulling off the hat trick left the Democratic Party establishment in shambles
“And the roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment tonight. If Mamdani gets a hat trick, three out of three, this is a new era for the Democratic Party. And you can’t write off New York City because this is the place where both of– it’s a power center for the establishment and the insurgency. And they’re going head-to-head tonight. And right now, this is no longer a movement. This is a movement and a machine at the same time. And there’s just no way to sugarcoat this. If Mamdani pulls off a hat trick is a new era in Democratic Party politics,” Jones added.
Jones went on to say that in a battle between the socialist base and the Democratic Party establishment, this was no contest as Mamdani’s socialist, Islamist movement now holds the reins.
“This is a straight-up battle between the establishment and the insurgency. And the establishment is getting its butt kicked tonight in New York City, Jones concluded.
These results could also signify the canary in the coal mine for Schumer’s won future.
Schumer is up for re-election in 2028, and there are rumors that Ocasio-Cortez will challenge him in a primary.
These results show Schumer would be a dead man walking if that happens, and many political insiders expect him to retire rather than risk defeat in a primary by seeking another term.
