New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing the biggest decision of her career.
Ocasio-Cortez may not be considering the choice everyone expected.
And AOC took one trip that spelled doom for Chuck Schumer.
It’s common knowledge in political circles that Ocasio-Cortez is weighing her 2028 options to either run for President or Senate.
A Senate campaign means challenging Chuck Schumer in a primary or hoping that the threat of facing her in a primary forces Schumer to retire rather than run for a fifth term.
Previously, political insiders thought it was a foregone conclusion that Ocasio-Cortez would run for President given the ascendent socialist wing of the party and her position as the natural heir to Bernie Sanders.
That’s all now up in the air because the golden rule of politics is don’t pay attention to what politicians say; watch what they do.
And Axios reported that Ocasio-Cortez’s actions show she is leaning towards running for Senate, as she is now campaigning in upstate New York to build her brand and name recognition outside of her Bronx base.
“She’s barnstorming through upstate New York, meeting with local officials, and kicking off a voter turnout program that could help her collect valuable data for a possible Senate campaign.
In Buffalo, she met privately with Mayor Sean Ryan, then held an impromptu press conference with him, generating coverage of the duo on local TV news.
She and her team later kicked off a voter-turnout operation that could help them gather information about the electorate outside New York City,” Axios reported.
Axios also reported that Ocasio-Cortez’s message is very New York-focused.
“I want to be very forthright about our intentions here, which is to transform the state of New York,” Ocasio-Cortez told activists in a Buffalo arts center who were attending a training session of hers aimed at getting inactive voters to the polls.
In Ithaca, she appeared at an apple festival with Rep. Josh Riley (D-N.Y.) and on Sunday was scheduled to headline a “Students vs. Billionaires” town hall. It’s friendly terrain: The city is home to several democratic socialist elected officials, and Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America,” Axios added.
AOC isn’t acting like a Presidential candidate, and she’s gone radio silent in the key early states that White House hopefuls travel to develop a base of support.
“Meanwhile, some influential Democrats in early presidential primary states have told us they haven’t yet heard from AOC. And she hasn’t made public visits this year to some of those early states, a contrast from other potential 2028 contenders who are practically living in them,” Axios reported.
Ocasio-Cortez also wasn’t talking like a Presidential candidate.
“The movement is so much bigger than any one person,” Ocasio-Cortez told Axios when asked to respond to the idea that many socialists see her as their best shot in 2028.
“These decisions aren’t always about punditry or ideology. It’s about putting the country first,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “What’s important is ending … the corrupt reign of the Trump administration, as well as any of its acolytes.”
Polls show Chuck Schumer’s popularity plunging with Democrats.
And AOC could see that race as a layup while remembering that Democrat elites rigged the 2016 and 2020 primaries to deny Sanders the nomination over fears that running a socialist meant certain defeat.
