Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, made a big announcement Sunday. According to her, the U.S. plans to instill new sanctions on Russia. This decision comes just days after the recent chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians.
As Haley said on CBS Face The Nation, the U.S. will be placing sanctions on Russian companies that have been aiding in any equipment related to the Syrian leader and the country’s use of chemical weapons.
The purpose of these sanctions is to punish Russia for its support of the Syrian government. However, both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Russia have been denying they had any involvement in these chemical attacks.
In response to the attacks, France, the U.S. and the U.K. chose to launch more than 100 targets at three targets in Syria. Each of these targets had been aiding in the production or use of chemical weapons.
On Saturday, the U.N. Security Council took a vote, and chose to reject this proposal.
