Fox News Channel is playing with fire.
The network declared war on Tucker Carlson and things are about to get messy.
And that’s all because Tucker Carlson knows the one secret that could ruin Fox News.
Fox News took Tucker Carlson off the air but did not technically fire him.
The network is paying out Carlson’s contract to sit at home so Fox can enforce the non-compete clause in Carlson’s contract which prevents him from signing up with another network.
At first, Carlson’s representatives believed Fox News would let Carlson out of his contract if he only re-started his show on a social media platform as a livestream.
That led to Carlson posting a video that went viral with tens of millions of views that he would launch a new show as a Twitter exclusive.
But then something changed.
Fox News began playing hardball and insisting that Carlson’s non-compete clause blocked Carlson from even broadcasting a livestreamed version of his show on social media.
That change in Fox’s posture likely had to do with the fact that Fox News Channel’s ratings never recovered from the decision to fire Carlson and viewership is down across virtually every program.
Carlson’s allies made it clear that if Fox News wanted to declare war on the most popular cable news host ever, management was making a big mistake.
A report in The Daily Beast revealed that Carlson knew a treasure trove of secrets about life at Fox News including sex scandals and “workplace misconduct.”
The Daily Beast reports:
Fox had been willing to let Carlson appear on a digital platform so long as he stayed off traditional TV—something which they have since backtracked on as the former on-air host announced he’s taking his show to Twitter. That stalemate has pushed Carlson and his team to ratchet up the pressure with newly planted stories about his ex-employer.
According to people familiar with the situation, Carlson and his team’s deep industrial knowledge of the network means they are sitting on a treasure trove of potentially damaging Fox secrets, including revelations about extramarital affairs and workplace misconduct.
If Carlson is forced to take legal action to win his freedom, the lawsuit will air all of Fox News Channel’s dirty laundry.
That’s why Carlson’s camp believes common sense will eventually prevail at Fox News and that management will let Carlson out of his deal to do his show on Twitter.
“The hope is that Fox comes to their senses and realizes they can’t stop Tucker from speaking and doing his thing and if not that’s unfortunate and there would be some pain inflicted,” a Carlson ally told The Daily Beast.
