Mitch McConnell’s been scheming for weeks to use impeachment to excommunicate Donald Trump from the Republican Party.
Now he may finally get his wish.
And Donald Trump will be red with rage when he sees the impeachment deal Chuck Schumer struck.
McConnell “won” a two-week delay to start the trial on February 9 after the House of Representatives sends the article of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, January 25.
Punchbowl News exclusively reported:
Senate leaders are poised to announce an agreement this evening on the timeline for President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.
Here’s what we know: The earliest the trial could start as early as Feb. 9, which is essentially the timeline initially suggested by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.McConnell wanted Trump to have two weeks to prepare his case, and it appears he got that as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer(D-N.Y.) has signed off on this schedule.
On Monday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will send the articles to the Senate. On Tuesday, the Senate will swear in the senators, and issue a summons to Trump.
Trump’s response to the impeachment article and the House’s pre-trial brief will be due Feb. 2. On Feb. 8, Trump must submit his pre-trial brief.
McConnell sold this as a “win” for Trump because it allowed his lawyers to prepare briefs in response to the snap article of impeachment that was voted on without any witnesses or hearings to gather evidence.
But this ignored two realities.
First, Republicans were coalescing around the constitutional principle that impeachment is meant as a check for Congress to deploy to remove a sitting President.
Donald Trump will be out of office for over a month by the time this trial likely concludes.
Second, delaying the trial for two weeks really benefits Joe Biden the most, which is why Biden announced he supported a two-week pause.
“I haven’t heard the details of it, but I do think that having some time to get our administration up and running,” Biden said. “I want to thank the Senate for passing out our secretary of Defense, it looks like our secretary of Treasury, looks like our secretary of State’s in place, so the more time we have to get up and running to meet these crises, the better.”
That’s because a delay gives the Senate two weeks to confirm Biden’s radical and unqualified Cabinet nominees which will allow them to open the borders, impose job-killing regulations, promote abortion-on-demand and attack the idea that there are only two genders.
McConnell sold this like he won Donald Trump a significant victory.
But in reality, McConnell worked behind the scenes to do a solid for Joe Biden and sell out the Republican Party base.
