Former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy is one of the most prominent commentators on Fox News.
Gowdy is also a high-profile supporter of President Trump.
And now Trey Gowdy revealed something about Fox News that took everyone by surprise.
In an interview with Martha MacCallum for her Fox News program, Gowdy discussed the future of the GOP now that President Trump conceded defeat in the 2020 election and Joe Biden will be sworn in as the next President.
Gowdy claimed the biggest problem with the Republican Party was the lack of a consistent policy message.
“That’s my challenge for the party, is, if you wanted to stump me with a question, ask me what the modern Republican Party believes, with consistency, cycle after cycle, and then ask me who those defining voices are,” Gowdy explained. “You just heard one, [Sen.] Tommy Cotton, [a] really smart, young leader. So is [Sen.] Tim Scott, Nikki Haley. But most of the voices in the conservative movement have never held political office before.”
Part of the problem is the gap between what President Trump and his grassroots supporters champion and the agenda the rest of the Republican Party establishment supports.
The vast majority of elected Republican officials want to be the party of Mitt Romney and hate the voters and policies that President Trump brought into the GOP.
President Trump and his supporters believe the “Make America Great Again” agenda presents the winning formula as evidenced by the President winning the 2016 election and racking up 75,000,000 votes in 2020.
Gowdy claimed that outside of President Trump, the biggest names in the conservative movement were all Fox News primetime hosts.
“Most of the voices in the conservative movement have never held political office before… Fox has much more influence over Republican primary voters than anyone who’s elected,” Gowdy stated.
Now that Twitter and Facebook banned President Trump, the conservatives with the biggest audiences and platforms were Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham.
Their primetime shows in Fox reach millions of viewers and they largely set the tone for what the conservative movement is focusing on and talking about.
As of 12:01PM on January 20, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are the highest-ranking Republicans in America.
But no one thinks they speak for conservatives or hold any sway with the base.
Until the Republicans stage their 2024 nominating contest to hash out who will carry the party’s flag into the presidential election campaign, Carlson, Hannity and Ingraham—all strong supporters of the President’s “Make America Great Again” agenda—will be the defining voices in the conservative movement.
