Trey Gowdy is about to start his new show on Fox News.
But there is a problem.
Trey Gowdy made one promise that will not make Donald Trump very happy.
In October 2019 it was revealed that United States Attorney John Durham was conducting a criminal investigation into the origins of the Russian collusion hoax.
But as the months dragged on, it did not appear Durham made any progress.
Durham only racked up one guilty plea from FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith for doctoring an email related to the FBI seeking a FISA warrant to spy on former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.
Clinesmith ended up serving no jail time.
Trump and many of his supporters believed the Durham investigation was the last chance to hold the FBI officials that launched the Russian collusion investigation on the basis of falsehoods accountable.
Now in 2021 Trump and his allies basically lost all hope.
Trump even sent out a press statement wondering where Durham was.
On his podcast just days before his new Fox News show debuted, former Congressman Trey Gowdy offered his thoughts as to the status of the Durham probe.
“The reality is no one knows,” Gowdy stated. “I mean I — there are people that were really, really high up in government. Like really high up in government in the last administration that I talked to in the last week, and they don’t have a clue.
“I certainly don’t [know] as just a regular old, washed-up former country prosecutor in South Carolina. I don’t know,” Gowdy continued.
Gowdy explained thatDurham stayed silent on the status of his investigation for two reasons.
First, Gowdy argued that prosecutors should not leak to the media while they are in the process of building a criminal case.
Second, Gowdy expressed his belief that the Durham investigation was partly a counterintelligence probe where investigators dig into the process, but do not bring criminal charges.
“Part of me thinks that prosecutors who don’t have enough to allege a crime need to keep their mouths shut,” Gowdy added. “And part of me thinks that this is more than just a criminal investigation. It’s a counterintelligence investigation. It’s an investigation into whether procedures and powers that we give government, whether folks were good stewards of those powers, and you could make an argument that we should know that. We should know whether or not someone abused their authority or their power in a non-criminal way. And I guess we should know if they did so in a criminal way, but for some reason, the case is not prosecutable, I guess. But I am not convinced that we should know everyone who is investigated but never charged because that’s just not the way the system works.”
Gowdy added that was why he promised his audience he would never predict criminal charges in any investigation because it only served to inflate expectations as to what was really going on behind the scenes.
“The lesson here, one of the lessons here I think, to my former Republican colleagues, is when you over-promise, or you assure people that there are going to be indictments,” Gowdy stated, “and you assure people that folks are going to jail, and you have no power and no access to make sure that happens, you just after a while begin to lose credibility. Which is why you have never heard me say, ‘I promise you someone is going to jail as a result of the Durham probe.'”
This is not what Trump and his supporters want to hear.
Many on the right believe James Comey, Andrew McCabe, John Brennan and James Clapper committed clear crimes in trying to frame Trump and his campaign for colluding with the Russians.
However, it does not appear that any criminal charges are in the offing.
