Former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy watched the battle play out for the heart and soul of the Republican Party.
Gowdy was not happy with what he saw.
And Trey Gowdy broke some bad news that Trump supporters are going to hate.
Speaking on Fox News Gowdy attacked the conservatives blocking Kevin McCarthy from ascending to the position of speaker of the House.
Gowdy stated that McCarthy won 200 votes on every ballot and that no other alternative Republican candidate even came close.
“Look, I got bad news for Kevin’s opponents. He’s got a lot more than 20 friends. So, there are more than 20 people that are going to say, you know what? We are not ever voting for anyone else. Bret, you got a guy who’s got 200 votes and the next leading vote-getter for very good reasons doesn’t want to be the speaker of the House,” Gowdy stated.
Twenty Republicans voted against McCarthy on every ballot and Gowdy smeared them as the “kamikaze wing” of the Republican Party while ignoring their concerns about how McCarthy planned to install RINOs as committee chairs and pass a rules package that would enhance the swamp’s power.
“And, yet, this kamikaze wing within the Republican Party knows better than 85 percent of the rest of the conference. Jimmy doesn’t want the job for a very good reason. I don’t know what happens. I will say this. They didn’t want a secure border. That is not what the negotiation was over, Bret. It was — there are a handful of people who want gavels and want things that they can’t get based on merit, and they can’t get it based on intelligence, but they want it given to them by the speaker of the House, and Kevin said no,” Gowdy added.
The anti-McCarthy bloc of the party proposed at least three different alternative speaker of the House candidates.
McCarthy’s establishment allies rejected every single one.
The speaker election devolved into a standoff between an “only Kevin” wing and a group of conservatives that wanted to improve the House by making it more open for debate and amendments while at the same time giving conservatives an equal voice in shaping legislative and policy direction.
McCarthy went on to lose three more ballots as the vote total against McCarthy actually increased.
Trey Gowdy supporting McCarthy was not that surprising.
While Gowdy entered Congress in the Tea Party wave of 2010 Gowdy’s taken stances at odds with conservatives.
Gowdy defended the Robert Mueller Russian collusion witch hunt and also supported red flag confiscation laws.
Sticking up for Kevin McCarthy was yet another example of how sometimes Gowdy goes astray.
