A new scientific poll finds a majority of Americans support a plan by congressional Republicans to cut off taxpayer funds to the multi-million dollar abortion corporation Planned Parenthood.
Unlike previous polls by mainstream media organizations, this Robert Morris University poll accurately described the Republican proposal.
In a press release announcing the poll results, RMU stated:
The poll asked respondents if they would support or oppose a plan by U.S. Congressional Republicans to shift Planned Parenthood funds to community clinics that perform the same services but do not perform abortions. Just over half, 53.3 percent, strongly or somewhat support the plan while 31.5 percent are strongly or somewhat opposed.
Philip Harold, RMU professor of political science, said RMU’s polls shows different results than other national polls because the question is worded more clearly. Instead of simply asking, “Do you think all federal funding for Planned Parenthood should be cut off?,” the RMU poll asked instead: “Congressional Republicans favor shifting Planned Parenthood federal funds to community clinics that perform the same services, but do not perform abortions. Would you say you support or oppose this plan?”
As awareness of the recent controversial Planned Parenthood videos goes up, so does support for the Congressional Republicans’ plan. Those who indicate they are very aware (60 percent) were more likely to support the plan than those who said they were somewhat aware (54.3 percent) and somewhat unaware (41.7 percent).
Congressional Democrats defeated the plan, which was proposed by Republican Iowa Senator Joni Ernst.
The bill would have taken the over $500 million in taxpayer funds that currently go to Planned Parenthood and instead offered it to community health centers.
Community health centers outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics 13 to 1, and they offer a broader range of services.
The move would have dramatically expanded women’s access to contraception.
The bill would have also protected women from breast cancer. Planned Parenthood does not perform mammograms, but community heath centers do.
“This legislation redirects federal funding taken from Planned Parenthood to other eligible entities that provide health services for women, like community health centers and hospitals,” said Ernst.
“There would be absolutely no reduction in overall federal funding available to support women’s health. Community health centers provide more comprehensive primary and preventative health care services – except abortion – regardless of a person’s ability to pay. Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood facilities do not perform in-house mammograms,” said Ernst.
“The American taxpayers should not be asked to fund an organization like Planned Parenthood that has shown a sheer distain for human dignity and complete disregard for women and their babies,” said Ernst. “These videos are hard for anyone to defend and pull back the curtain on Planned Parenthood’s careless practice of rummaging for unborn baby organs to be harvested and sold at a price.”
