Joe Biden’s legislative agenda stalled in Congress as Biden’s poll numbers sank.
Biden traveled to Capitol Hill to lobby Democrats to get on the same page.
But now something happened to Joe Biden at a private meeting that left Democrats shook.
Democrats are stuck.
Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are trying to ram a $1.2 trillion so-called “infrastructure” bill and a $3.5 trillion socialist welfare bill through Congress.
Democrats planned to link the two together to guarantee both moderates and socialists voting for both pieces of legislation.
But socialists in the House of Representatives won’t support the smaller $1.2 trillion mini-Green New Deal bill because red state Democrat Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema won’t back the $3.5 trillion bill.
Biden showed up to Congress and made things worse.
The president is supposed to be able to nudge the party into accepting his agenda.
Instead Biden heightened the division by siding with the socialists.
Biden told swing seat Democrats that a vote on the $1.2 trillion bill “ain’t going to happen until we reach an agreement on the next piece of legislation.”
Linking the two bills flew in the face of claims made by moderate Democrats and RINO Republicans that claimed the two pieces of legislation stood separately on their own merits.
But since Manchin and Sinema said they would not support a $3.5 trillion socialist spending bill, Biden told leftists they would have to settle for a lower total of spending for socialist welfare and Green New Deal programs.
“Let’s try to figure out what we are for in reconciliation … and then we can move ahead,” Biden said.
Biden added that even a small socialist spending bill “can make historic investments.”
Then Joe Biden tipped his hand that the road ahead was difficult by admitting that this could take weeks or even months to vote on.
“I’m telling you, we’re going to get this done,” Biden told reporters upon leaving the meeting. “It doesn’t matter when. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in six minutes, six days or six weeks. We’re going to get it done.”
But it is what happened at the end of the meeting that was so concerning.
Biden offered to take questions from Democrats when his staff interjected to shuffle Biden out of the room before he took any unscripted questions.
“INSIDE the caucus: At the end of his remarks, BIDEN offered to take questions from members but his staff jumped in. He didn’t take any questions,” POLITICO’s Sarah Ferris reported.
Biden’s cognitive decline became a heightened issue after Biden hid from the public during the Afghanistan debacle.
Democrats complain that one reason Biden’s agenda isn’t moving forward is because Biden won’t engage himself in the negotiations.
But Biden’s staff hustling Biden out of the room out of fear of what he will say in an unscripted setting is another example of the cognitive decline that is likely preventing Biden from weighing in more forcefully in these discussions.
