Before the 2016 election, former FBI Director James Comey felt that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency. As such, he now says this belief had an influence on his decisions surrounding the probe into Clinton’s private email server.
During an ABC News segment, interviewers were asking Comey about Clinton’s statements regarding why she lost the election. After all, Clinton seems to be telling the whole world that Comey’s letter announcing the FBI email investigation was what “drove the nail into her coffin” regarding the election.
Comey said he hopes that isn’t true, and that people will try to take his perspective. He said he was trying to do the right thing – despite repercussions.
Comey also admits his beliefs about Clinton’s possible victory were a factor in his decision to write the letter. “… I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump, and so I’m sure that it was a factor,” he said.
Comey also said that, while working for the FBI, he was not able to consider how his decisions would affect the candidates’ political reputations.
Clinton, of course, chose to blame her election loss on Comey. According to her, she had the election win in the bag…until late October. This is when Comey sent the letter to Congress, announcing the FBI’s reviewal of emails from Clinton’s private server.
Ironically, just before the election, Comey made the announcement that these emails did not contain any new information.
