Tucker Carlson could not believe it.
Carlson thought he had Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s word.
But then Ron DeSantis said two words that left Tucker Carlson red with rage.
Ron DeSantis made his first big waves in the 2024 GOP presidential contest by siding with the conservative base and not the swamp establishment by saying America had no vital interest in what DeSantis called a territorial dispute between Russia and Ukraine.
DeSantis correctly stated that Joe Biden’s war in Ukraine distracted from checking the rise of Communist China and that escalating the war by sending the Ukrainians F-16s and long-range missiles threatened to draw America into a direct conflict with Russia.
That answer provoked fury among RINOs like Texas Senator John Cornyn — who authored the largest gun grab in 30 years and is trying to cut a deal with Democrats on amnesty for millions of illegal aliens — who attacked DeSantis as being naïve for not wanting nuclear war with Russia.
“I was kind of surprised. I mean, Governor DeSantis is a veteran. He’s a smart guy. I think he’s been a very good governor. And I just I don’t understand him saying that Ukraine isn’t important to the United States,” Cornyn began, adding that “it raises questions.”
Part of DeSantis’s strategy to defeat Donald Trump in the GOP primary is to appeal to both the GOP base and the establishment donor class.
And DeSantis quickly backtracked and showed the donor class he could play ball by adopting their war drum rhetoric in an interview with liberal British journalist Piers Morgan.
DeSantis walked back taking the position that the conflict in Ukraine was a territorial dispute that did not involve America.
“Well, I think it’s been mischaracterized. Obviously, Russia invaded (last year) — that was wrong. They invaded Crimea and took that in 2014 — That was wrong,” DeSantis told Morgan.
Morgan then asked DeSantis about the International Criminal Court indicting Putin for war crimes over the atrocities in Ukraine.
“There is a move now to hold him accountable for war crimes,” Morgan stated, “bombing maternity hospitals and genocidal activity in parts of Ukraine wiping out whole cities like Mariupol. Would you support that?”
DeSantis eagerly repeated the war criminal line and appeared to call for regime change in Russia by endorsing the idea of holding Putin accountable, which can only happen by removing Putin from office.
“I think he is a war criminal,” DeSantis declared. “This ICC … we have not done that in the US because we’re concerned about our soldiers or people being brought under it. So, I don’t know about that route, but I do think that he should be held accountable.”
Tucker Carlson slammed DeSantis that night on his show for repeating Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney talking points by mocking politicians who repeat “childish slogans.”
