Former National Security Advisor Susan Rice was revealed to have requested the unmasking of Trump officials caught up in surveillance of foreign targets.
But what did she do with that information?
And recently, she made an unbelievable claim that left many scratching their heads.
The House and Senate Intelligence committees have expanded their Russia probe to include the illegal leaks of classified information.
Members of the deep state – most likely former Obama officials – broke the law when they leaked that former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had been picked up on surveillance talking to the Russian Ambassador.
But Americans’ names are supposed to be protected in transcripts of surveilled conversations.
So critics raised two big questions about these leaks.
First, who unmasked the names?
Second, who illegally leaked them to the press?
The answer to the first question is Susan Rice.
Now investigators are honing in on finding the leakers.
Rice made the claim she did not leak the names of Trump officials to the press.
Breitbart reports on her statements from an interview conducted on CNN:
“ZAKARIA: One of the elements of fallout from Russia’s attempt to influence the American election was that there was a certain amount of intelligence work being done on Russia. Our intelligence agencies were listening to what Russian government officials or Russian intelligence officials were saying. Donald Trump has accused you of trying to unmask the Americans on the other end of those conversations in an attempt to implicate the Trump campaign or people associated with Trump in some kind of collusion with Russia. What is your reaction to that? It’s an extraordinary charge by the President of the United States.
RICE: Well Fareed, it’s absolutely false. I’ve addressed this previously. I think now we’ve had subsequently members of Congress on the intelligence committees on both sides of the aisle take a look at the information that apparently was the basis for Chairman Nunes’ concern and say publicly that they didn’t see anything that was unusual or untoward. I did my job, which was to protect the American people, and I did it faithfully and with― to the best of my ability, and never did I do anything that was untoward with respect to the intelligence I received.”
But is this denial believable?
Rice has a history of lying.
She famously appeared on five Sunday shows and claimed the Benghazi terrorist attack was caused by a YouTube video.
And after Obama traded five top Taliban commanders for Bowe Bergdahl, Rice stated Bergdahl had served with honor and distinction.
But then Bergdahl was charged with desertion and misbehavior for abandoning his post and wandering off before being captured by the Taliban.
Finally, Rice claimed in a February PBS interview that she knew nothing about the surveillance which had caught up members of the Trump team.
Given Rice’s very public history of lying about everything, critics take her denial about leaking the names with a very big grain of salt.
