North Korea set off emergency meetings around the world.
The standoff with Kim Jong Un reached a dangerous new level.
And North Korea just fired this nuclear ballistic missile that could strike the U.S.
Kamala Harris convened an emergency meeting with other world leaders after North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launch.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris met with leaders of Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia in Bangkok, where they condemned North Korea’s latest missile launch.
Harris deemed the launch a “brazen violation” of U.N. Security resolutions, as well as an act which “destabilizes security in the region and unnecessarily raises tensions.”
South Korea “strongly condemns this brazen act … We urge the DPRK to immediately cease all types of provocations and abide by relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions,” said its prime minister Han Duck-soo.
North Korea test fired a ballistic missile that for the first time showed the communist hermit kingdom possessed the ability to deliver a nuclear strike anywhere on the U.S. mainland.
NBC News reported that “the ICBM-class ballistic missile launched today could have a range of over 15,000 km, in which case, all of the U.S. mainland would be included in its range.”
When Donald Trump took office North Korea also tried to test Trump.
In September 2017 North Korea conducted its seventh nuclear test with Kim Jong Un bragging that his nation now possessed hydrogen bomb technology.
That led to Donald Trump threatening North Korea with fire and fury and to utterly destroy North Korea if it continued to threaten the United States with nuclear weapons.
Kim Jong Un then backed down for a time and met with Trump for a summit.
North Korea also did not conduct any missile tests until the end of 2018.
Once again, North Korea is threatening to conduct a nuclear test to test the measure of a new administration.
Biden administration officials threatened a greater military response – although obviously no one is going to war – if North Korea attempted another nuclear test.
The administration likely meant it would step up war games drills with South Korea or enhance its military alliance posture with other Asian-Pacific nations.
But Kim Jong Un clearly does not respect Joe Biden the way he did Donald Trump.
This is not the first time a hostile world leader believed Biden to be a pushover.
Many believe Russian President Vladimir Putin observed the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and thought Biden was too weak to stop him from invading Ukraine.
That conflict also threatens to spiral out of control into all-out nuclear war.
War with North Korea would be a disaster as tens of thousands of U.S. troops sit in South Korea essentially as a trip wire to start a conflict with the North Koreans.
North Korea never attacks South Korea because that would mean killing U.S. troops and inviting total war with the United States.
But now that North Korea proved it can strike anywhere in the U.S. with a nuclear strike, tensions in the region are at an all-time high.
