House Speaker Nancy Pelosi faced a major problem.
Now it threatens to derail her legislative agenda and wreck Joe Biden’s presidency.
Nancy Pelosi was left scrambling after these two Democrats’ curveball announcement.
Pelosi planned to pass nearly five trillion dollars in spending on the Green New Deal and socialist welfare programs by linking two bills.
The Senate passed a 1.2-trillion-dollar down payment on the Green New Deal as political cover to get moderates on board for a 3.5-trillion-dollar blowout bill Bernie Sanders is writing.
Pelosi reasoned that by linking the two spending bills it would force moderates and leftists to support both bills even though each faction opposed one of the pieces of legislation.
That strategy imploded as members from swing seats in both the House and the Senate expressed opposition to Pelosi’s strategy.
Arizona Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s spokesperson John LaBombard declared that Sinema opposed the Bernie Sanders 3.5-trillion-dollar Green New Deal and socialist welfare spending bill.
“[It] is a historic win for our nation’s everyday families and employers and, like every proposal, should be considered on its own merits,” LaBombard wrote. “Proceedings in the U.S. House will have no impact on Kyrsten’s views about what is best for our country – including the fact that she will not support a budget reconciliation bill that costs $3.5 trillion.”
Socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez view spending $3.5 trillion on welfare programs and Green New Deal policies as a compromise and they will not stand for one dollar being cut from the total.
If Sinema gets her way and reduces the overall price tag of the Sanders budget bill, Ocasio-Cortez and her allies will tank the 1.2-trillion-dollar bill favored by the moderates.
At that point, whatever is left of the Biden presidency goes down in flames.
West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin backed up Sinema saying he also opposed a 3.5-trillion-dollar spending bill.
“It would send a terrible message to the American people if this bipartisan bill is held hostage. I urge my colleagues in the House to move swiftly to get this once in a generation legislation to the President’s desk for his signature,” Manchin wrote.
Without Manchin and Sinema’s votes, Democrats cannot pass the Sanders budget bill.
Other Democrats squeezed Pelosi.
New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer refused deals from Pelosi to drop opposition to the 3.5-trillion-dollar bill unless Pelosi delinked it from the 1.2-trillion-dollar fake infrastructure bill and held an immediate vote on the smaller bill that already passed the Senate.
Pelosi refused to do that knowing if she delinked the bills the swing district Democrats would feel free to vote against the 3.5-trillion-dollar bill.
“We cannot squander this majority and this Democratic White House by not passing what we need to do,” Pelosi told Democrats. “Right now, we have an opportunity to pass something so substantial for our country, so transformative we haven’t seen anything like it.”
Both moderates and socialists have enough votes to tank the bill they each oppose.
And now Nancy Pelosi finds herself between a rock and a hard place where failure to deliver could drive the final nail in the coffin for the Biden presidency.
