Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thought she had a deal with Nancy Pelosi.
But would Pelosi actually honor that agreement about stepping down?
And Nancy Pelosi took Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by surprise with this retirement decision.
Nancy Pelosi promised skeptical freshmen Democrats that won election in 2018 that she would only serve two terms as speaker of the House.
Pelosi’s promise won the votes of skeptical socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and nervous swing seat Democrats and Pelosi once again wielded the gavel.
But 2022 spelled the end of Pelosi’s deal with her caucus to serve as speaker of the House.
Nancy Pelosi put an end – for the time being – to the questions about her future by announcing well in advance of the March 11 filing deadline that she would run for re-election in November.
“While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial: nothing less is at stake than our Democracy,” Pelosi wrote on social media announcing her re-election.
“But we don’t agonize-we organize. I am running for re-election to Congress to deliver For The People and defend Democracy,” Pelosi added.
Pelosi is facing no serious opposition in her deep-blue San Francisco district so Pelosi limited her announcement video to the false talking point about Democrats defending democracy.
“Our vision for a world at peace requires a strong Democracy at home,” Pelosi stated. “We are grateful to our men and women in uniform, veterans, and military families and honor their sacrifice with our insistence on securing voting rights.”
In reality, Democrats are the party threatening democracy with a federal election takeover bill.
This power grab would introduce new avenues for voter fraud by gutting voter ID laws while at the same time imposing ballot harvesting and no-excuse mail-in voting on every state in America.
“Our democracy is at risk because of assaults on the truth… and the state-by-state assault on voting rights,” Pelosi stated. “This election is crucial. Nothing less is at stake than our Democracy… and that is why I am running for reelection to Congress.”
Pelosi’s announcement may be a case of less than meets the eye.
The State of the Union is scheduled for March 1.
If Pelosi announced she wasn’t running for re-election it would cripple Pelosi’s ability to wrangle votes for the Democrats’ attempt to resurrect Joe Biden’s nearly five-trillion-dollar socialist spending binge.
Pelosi announcing her retirement before the midterms would also send a signal to rank-and-file Democrats that party leadership is throwing in the towel and depress turnout.
While it is unlikely Democrats can hold on to the majority in the House of Representatives, a further depressed Democrat base could cost the party key Senate races as well as races for governor and secretary of state in key battlegrounds.
Even with this announcement the smart money is that Pelosi retires after the November election and heads off into retirement.
