Joe Biden is in more trouble than he thinks.
And behind closed doors, Democrats looked at numbers that made their blood run cold.
Now Nancy Pelosi saw secret polling data that meant serious bad news for Joe Biden.
The most recent Pew poll showed Joe Biden’s approval rating declining to 44 percent approve and 55 disapprove.
This represented a 21-point swing from Pew’s last poll taken in July.
Political analyst Amy Walter of The Cook Political Report explained why Biden’s job approval tanked.
“But, less than a year into his tenure, voters don’t see the ‘return to normal’ they had been promised. Far from turning the corner on COVID, the country remains anxious and divided over everything from booster shots to vaccine mandates. A botched Afghanistan pull-out was quickly followed by more chaos on the southern border. Earlier success at bipartisan legislating has dissolved into intra-party fighting over the contours of the president’s signature legislation,” Walter wrote.
But most disturbing for Democrats – Walter added – was that the cascading series of crises punctured Joe Biden’s support with swing voters in the districts Democrats must hold in 2022 if Nancy Pelosi wants to remain speaker.
Walter noted that private polling data – which is shared with all the major players in Washington including Nancy Pelosi – showed a ten point drop in support for Joe Biden in battleground districts.
“All of this has taken a toll on Biden’s standing with the public. Not only are his national job approval ratings underwater (the fivethirtyeight.com average currently has him at 46 percent favorable to 49 percent unfavorable), but he’s slipped under 50 percent in a recent Washington Post poll in Virginia — a state he easily carried in 2020. Private polling is picking up double-digit drops in Biden performance in competitive House seats,” Walter continued.
Democrats already face an increasingly narrow path to cling to their majority in the House of Representatives.
The Democrats are only targeting 21 districts in 2022, which is a nearly 50 percent drop from the 39 Democrats contested in the 2020 election.
Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are clearly on defense next fall.
But Amy Walter writes that the public polling data indicates the political environment grows more hostile because Biden’s failures on COVID, the economy, crime, Afghanistan and inflation undercut the Biden campaign message of 2020 – which was that Biden was a steady hand that could restore normalcy to American politics and life.
The polls show voters believe Biden is overwhelmed on every front and they no longer have faith in Biden as a competent and trustworthy leader.
As Amy Walter notes, that is bad news for Democrats because the president’s political standing is the best predictor of how the midterm elections will turn out.
