Democrats are facing fierce political headwinds.
Many in the party are waking up to the challenges that they created for themselves.
Nancy Pelosi realized that this promise is about to make her life a living hell.
Democrats are defending historically narrow majorities heading into next year’s election.
Even a slight shift among the voting public could hand Republicans control of Congress.
The Democrats’ majority in the House of Representatives is most at risk.
Historically, Americans’ perception of the economy is the leading indicator of how the party in power will perform.
And that is bad news for Democrats as runaway inflation sits front and center in the minds of the public.
The September report showed the largest year-to-year increase in prices – 5.4 percent – since 2013.
Food and gas prices surged around the country as the supply chain backlog caused shortages of goods across every sector of the economy.
The Biden administration knows it has a problem on its hands and Jen Psaki appeared on CNN to try and spin the disaster.
Psaki told host Jake Tapper that inflation would subside by next year.
“What people should know is that inflation is going to come down next year. Economists have said that. They’re all projecting that. But we’re working to attack these cost issues that are impacting the American people every single day. But there [are] different issues in different sectors, and many of the ones you mentioned.” Psaki stated.
But not everyone in the administration got the memo.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emerged from going AWOL for two months to appear on Tapper’s Sunday show and warned Americans that the supply chain issues would last through next year.
“Certainly a lot of the challenges that we’ve been experiencing this year will continue into next year. But there are both short-term and long-term steps that we can take to do something about it,” Buttigieg stated.
The supply chain breakdowns lasting into 2022 means inflation will last into 2022.
Jen Psaki and other officials claiming inflation will recede in 2022 set Democrats up to lose the expectation game.
Should inflation still rage in 2022 Americans will likely hold Democrats responsible and it could cost the party their congressional majorities.
If there is one thing Americans do not like it is when politicians claim a crisis is over when it plainly is not.
And promising to control inflation by next year could come back to haunt Democrats.
