Nancy Pelosi is about to make her future plans clear.
The speaker of the House is planning to throw her party a curveball.
And Nancy Pelosi is about to make a retirement announcement that breaks this big promise.
Nancy Pelosi has until March 11 to decide to file to run for re-election.
For months speculation swirled inside the Democrat Party that Pelosi would finally call it quits.
One factor reportedly influencing Pelosi’s decision to walk away from Congress was a 2018 promise Pelosi made to skeptical Democrats to only serve two terms as speaker of the House.
Pelosi made this bargain to secure the 218 votes necessary to win the speaker’s gavel.
With 2022 marking the end of that bargain it only seemed natural that Pelosi – who has led House Democrats since 2003 – would retire rather than accept a demotion to becoming just a regular member of the House of Representatives.
Pelosi has other plans and let word leak that not only was Pelosi planning to stay through the 2022 midterms, but that Pelosi also planned to break her agreement with Democrats and seek to stay in leadership in 2023.
CNN reports:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi will stay until at least after the midterm elections, extending her nearly 20-year run as the House’s top Democrat after she turns 82 and, perhaps, beyond.
She is planning to file and run for reelection in her San Francisco district next year — at least for now — in keeping with her pattern of deciding about staying in Congress after the elections, when she likely will have won an 18th full term.
And sources familiar with Pelosi’s thinking say she isn’t ruling out the possibility of trying to stay in leadership after 2022, despite her original vow to leave as the top House Democrat. She’ll devote much of next year to raising money for Democrats as they try to hold their narrow majority, those sources tell CNN, adding to the nearly $1 billion her office calculates she has already raised for Democrats in her time as leader.
There may be more than meets the eye going on here.
Then-House Speaker Paul Ryan announced 2018 would be his last year in Congress months before the 2018 midterms.
Ryan’s retirement announcement amounted to an army general laying down his arms before a battle is even fought.
Republicans took Ryan quitting before the election as a sign the party leaders did not believe the GOP had any chance to win and it depressed the conservative base.
Pelosi clearly wants to avoid looking like she publicly conceded the election by announcing her retirement months before the vote.
In addition, Pelosi still has to manage Joe Biden’s agenda next year.
Not running for office would sap any ability by Pelosi to strong-arm Democrats into supporting Biden’s increasingly unpopular agenda and presidency.
Pelosi would render herself a lame duck speaker the second she announces she would not file for re-election.
Despite this report, many observers still expect Pelosi to retire, but will hold off on making the announcement after the 2022 midterm elections.
