House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reaching crunch time.
Democrats are facing the biggest decision of 2021.
And Nancy Pelosi got blindsided by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threatening Pelosi’s job.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is about to go to war with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
How that fight plays out could determine the Democrats’ fortunes in 2022.
Nancy Pelosi announced she would delink a $1.2 trillion so-called “infrastructure” bill that passed the Senate on a bipartisan vote and a $3.5 trillion socialist tax and spend welfare state bill Democrats hope to ram through Congress on a party line vote using the reconciliation process.
Democrat senators from red states like West Virginia’s Joe Manchin and Arizona’s Kyrsten Sinema balked at the price fearing the political blowback at home.
Since Democrats can only pass a reconciliation bill with all 50 Democrat senators on board, Sinema and Manchin’s objections forced Pelosi to delink the two bills.
That surrender enraged socialists who fear that once the so-called “infrastructure” bill – which is really a mini version of the Green New Deal – passes the Congress, swing seat Democrats will not support the larger socialist spending bill.
Bernie Sanders – who is drafting the socialist tax and spend bill – sent out the call that liberals should vote down the infrastructure bill unless it is paired with his $3.5 trillion spending binge saying socialists will lose all their leverage with the bill delinked.
“More importantly, it will end all leverage that we have to pass a major reconciliation bill. That means there will be no serious effort to address the long-neglected crises facing the working families of our country, the children, the elderly, the sick and the poor,” Sanders posted on social media.
“It also means that Congress will continue to ignore the existential threat to our country and planet with regard to climate change,” Sanders continued.
“I strongly urge my House colleagues to vote against the bipartisan infrastructure bill until Congress passes a strong reconciliation bill,” Sanders added.
Nancy Pelosi can only afford to lose three votes before the bill fails.
Squad members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib threw cold water on Pelosi’s plan.
Tlaib called delinking the two bills “a betrayal” and urged liberals to “hold the line” and vote down the infrastructure bill.
Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on opposing delinking the two bills.
“Our caucus is strongest when it’s unified, and decoupling these bills, it starts to pit priorities against one another,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “And that’s why I disagree with separating them.”
Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders rallying liberals to oppose the so-called “infrastructure” bill could end Pelosi’s reign as speaker.
Democrats are counting on that bill to prop up swing state members running for re-election next year.
If the bill goes down in flames Americans would look at united Democrat control of government not being able to pass Joe Biden’s chief policy priority and judge the party incompetent.
