Democrats are gunning for Nancy Pelosi’s job.
Even some of the biggest names in the party thought it was time for a change.
And Nancy Pelosi got bad news about being replaced. What she did next shocked everyone.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caught everyone in Washington off guard when she told The Intercept’s podcast host Jeremy Scahill that it was time to replace Nancy Pelosi as the Democrats’ leader in Congress and let a new generation of leftists take over.
“I do think we need new leadership in the Democratic Party,” Ocasio-Cortez explained. “I think one of the things that I have struggled with, I think that a lot of people struggle with, is the internal dynamics of the House has made it such that there [are] very little options for succession.”
Even though Ocasio-Cortez claimed she did not want to usurp Pelosi’s position as Speaker of the House, Pelosi responded in kind.
“The House is extraordinarily complex and I’m not ready,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “It can’t be me. I know that I couldn’t do that job.”
Nancy Pelosi knew how to handle this insurgency and knew she needed to send a message before Ocasio-Cortez sparked a rebellion that toppled her.
Committee assignments are the currency of the realm in Congress.
What committee a member sits on can make or break their career because it affects their ability to deliver for their district or build their national profile by advocating for pet policies.
Pelosi knows the latter is what drives ideologues like Ocasio-Cortez so Pelosi leveraged her power as Speaker of the House to pressure the Steering Committee to deny Ocasio-Cortez a spot on the Energy and Commerce Committee which deprived Ocasio-Cortez a perch to advocate for her socialist crown jewels of the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
“With five open slots on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., nominated four people and left the fifth spot open for members to choose between the two New Yorkers in a vote,” POLITICO first reported. “Fox News confirmed that Rice decisively won the vote 46-13,” Fox News exclusively reported.
Pelosi celebrated the announcement of committee assignments.
“It is an honor to announce the nomination of these outstanding Members to our exclusive committees for the 117th Congress,” Pelosi declared. “House Democrats are united in our mission to Build Back Better, and with these strong voices at the table, we will deliver on that sacred promise to make a real difference for all Americans.”
Ocasio-Cortez expressed her disappointment.
“It’s tough, always,” Ocasio-Cortez responded. “You always kind of shoot high and you don’t always get what you want and that’s, you know, I think totally understandable.”
This serves two purposes for Pelosi.
Not only does Pelosi punish a rival for speaking out of turn, but Republicans won double digit gains in the House by tying every Democrat to radical policies like “defund the police.”
If Ocasio-Cortez pushed for a vote on the Green New Deal and a socialist takeover of health care, it would be like shooting fish in a barrel for Republicans running in 2022 to brand every Democrat running as a rubber stamp for those unpopular socialist policies.
