Mitch McConnell decided to give his honest thoughts on the Democrats’ impeachment.
And Nancy Pelosi is thrilled.
Mitch McConnell made a shocking decision that completely changed impeachment.
The Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke with Republican colleagues Wednesday and said that he has “not made a final decision” on how to vote on the impeachment.
“While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate,” McConnell told Senate Republicans.
This is hardly a rebuttal of The New York Times’ story which reported that McConnell was pleased with the Democrats’ impeachment.
The Times reported that McConnell “has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking.”
The establishment Republicans will be undermining the American system if they help the Democrats impeach President Trump for the second time.
Impeachment isn’t supposed to be a political process, it’s supposed to be a legal one.
When the Republicans impeached Bill Clinton in 1998 they had DNA evidence that Clinton had committed the crime of perjury.
While Trump’s words at the rally preceding the storming of the Capitol were unwise, they are protected by the First Amendment.
Impeachment is not the right response and is, practically speaking, useless since the Senate won’t meet until the 19th when Trump will already be out of office.
Sen. Lindsey Graham called out the Republican leadership for their actions.
“To my Republican colleagues who legitimize this process, you are doing great damage not only to the country, the future of the presidency, but also to the party,” Graham said. “The millions who have supported President Trump and his agenda should not be demonized because of the despicable actions of a seditious mob.”
Graham took a jab at McConnell personally when he said about the Republican Senate leadership, “I fear they are making the problem worse, not better.”
“Supporting the impeachment of President Trump under these circumstances will do great damage to the institutions of government and could invite further violence at a time the President is calling for calm,” Graham wrote. “The process being used in the House to impeach President Trump is an affront to any concept of due process and will further divide the country.”
Both the Democrats and the establishment Republicans seem to think that attacking Trump will destroy his base.
What they don’t understand is that many Americans are concerned that they are going to be the ones under attack next and that they’ll have their First Amendment rights taken away next.
Instead of trying to punish Trump for his words, the Republican Party needs to take the radical position of protecting his right to free speech even if they disagree with what he is saying.
