Former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are likely rivals for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.
But conservatives were left speechless with how Pence drew his battle lines with the Florida governor.
And that’s because Mike Pence sided with Disney and attacked Ron DeSantis.
One of the big dividing lines between establishment Republicans and the conservative base is how they push back against the left’s attempt to leverage their control over cultural, academic, business, and entertainment institutions to inject woke ideology into every facet of American life.
Conservatives like Ron DeSantis believe that if woke corporations want to carry on like appendages of the Democrat Party and enter the political fray then Republicans should use their political power to push back.
The big flashpoint in this fight was Disney trying to kill the Parental Rights in Education bill which banned teachers from indoctrinating children in grades K-3 into transgenderism with sexually inappropriate lessons.
DeSantis responded by signing legislation that stripped Disney of special tax breaks and self-governing privileges.
Pence went on CNBC and tried to establish himself as the Mitt Romney-style moderate running on trying to appease the left and appear reasonable.
Host Andrew Ross Sorkin asked Pence about DeSantis standing up to Disney.
“What do you think of what DeSantis did with Disney in Florida? There’s two ways of looking at it, one is to say Disney spoke out on a political or social issue, but then there clearly was retribution, politically, against them. I think it’s empirical what happened. He said as much when he did it. So people talk about cancel culture. Some people say, well, you know, they’re canceling on one side. The other side says DeSantis used his political power to cancel them,” Sorkin asked Pence.
Pence responded that DeSantis stripping Disney of special favors granted by government violated his so-called “limited government” principles.
“I would say two things, number one, I fully supported Florida’s initiative to protect kids and protect parental rights. I was just in Iowa last week where there’s literally a school, the Linn-Mar Community School, that will allow a student to get a transition plan without parental at notice or approval. I fully support what Florida did about protecting kids under the third grade. But look, Disney stepped into the fray, they lost. But the idea of going after the taxing authority, you know, that was beyond the scope of what I, as a conservative, limited-government Republican would be prepared to do,” Pence stated.
Pence is the poster child for establishment Republicans who roll over with a “kick me” sign on their back whenever woke corporations confront them.
In 2015 Pence nearly destroyed his political career when as governor of Indiana, Pence folded under the pressure of the NCAA and other left-wing corporations threatening to boycott the state over a religious freedom law.
Pence appeased liberals looking to use corporate power to persecute Christians for opposing the homosexual agenda and opposing men in the girls’ bathroom.
Republicans are tired of pushover establishment Republicans like Pence.
And that’s why polls show Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are running far ahead of all the other potential 2024 GOP contenders.
