London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan is having a tough week. Namely, he’s been cracking down on knife carrying. This decision comes after the capital city’s increase in knife stabbings over the last two months.
On Twitter, Khan sent out a tweet saying: “No excuses: there is never a reason to carry a knife. Anyone who does will be caught, and they will feel the full force of the law.”
Khan’s tweet also had a link, showing London’s new action plan to increase police power and stop more knife attacks from occurring. A snapshot of the tweet is below.
London has had over 50 homicides since January 2018 alone. Most of the casualties have died from fatal stabbings.
As Britain has tight restrictions on guns, shootings are fairly rare. However, many murderers lately seem to be using knives to do their deeds.
Even more eye-opening, in February and March London had more homicides than New York. As Fox News reports, this was the city’s first record of this in modern history.
If this trend continues. London may surpass last year’s number of 130 murders.
There are many theories as to why London has been experiencing the rise in homicides. Many police and community workers are blaming the battles over control of the illegal drug trade. They also believe it’s due to a “postcode war” between various street gangs.
