Republicans are not going to like this.
Even many Democrats were taken by surprise.
Kamala Harris held a secret closed-door meeting that is about to change everything.
Joe Biden put Harris in charge of the Biden administration’s so-called “voting rights” push.
In reality that means trying to pass legislation that amounts to a federal takeover of elections through Congress.
The bill would impose mandates for mailing unsolicited ballots to every voter in America, allowing Democrat operatives to go door-to-door and collect ballots by the sack full, mandate universal voter registration that would put some illegal aliens on the voter rolls while removing criminal penalties for states registering noncitizens as voters, giving murderers, rapists and child molesters the right to vote, and would gut the ability of states to enforce voter ID laws.
Republicans argue this bill would inject massive fraud into elections and rig every contest in the Democrats’ favor.
The legislation stalled in the Senate because Democrats do not have the votes to break a Republican filibuster.
NPR host Asma Khalid asked Harris about South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn’s suggestion that Democrats change the rules in the Senate to create a carve-out to the filibuster to pass this one piece of legislation with just 51 votes.
Harris acknowledged that passing this legislation was an uphill battle because Chuck Schumer could not corral all 50 Democrats around a path forward.
“Here is what I will say, I believe that of all of the issues that the United States Congress can take up, the right to vote is the right that unlocks all the other rights. And for that reason, it should be one of its highest priorities. The members of the Senate are going to have to address this. We are going to continue to work to find a path forward no matter how difficult. Obviously, it’s going to require all the Democrats in the Senate to agree with that approach,” Harris began.
Khalid pressed Harris asking if Harris took Clyburn’s suggestion about creating a carve-out in the filibuster for a federal takeover of elections.
Harris shocked listeners by responding that she had made that very suggestion to Democrats reluctant to nuke the filibuster completely.
“I’m not going to kind of negotiate. Sorry, I don’t mean this in any offense, but I’m not going to negotiate this way. But I’m certainly having conversations with folks,” Harris added.
Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin are the only two senators on record opposing any changes to the filibuster.
But there are believed to be four to five more Democrats that also oppose eliminating or gutting the filibuster.
Harris is pressuring these Democrats behind closed doors to abandon their opposition to wiping out the filibuster to pass a bill that could guarantee a permanent Democrat majority in Congress and control of the White House.
