Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) found a new way to create controversy for his party.
Fetterman’s been in the middle of one mess after another since suffering a near-fatal stroke last May.
And John Fetterman hit Joe Biden with a nasty curveball that no one expected.
Fetterman was one of four Senate Democrats to vote against Joe Biden’s debt ceiling package.
Even though the bill represented unilateral surrender by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and congressional Republicans to hand Joe Biden a blank check to run up however many trillions of dollars in debt that he wants until January 1, 2025, John Fetterman complained about the package because of a couple of cosmetic concessions Biden granted McCarthy so McCarthy could save face.
Fetterman whined about some phony changes to work requirements so people who collect welfare can still rake in government benefits.
“I did not agree to these SNAP restrictions, and I won’t give Republicans an opening to try and take food from more food insecure Americans in Farm Bill negotiations later this year,” Fetterman ranted.
Fetterman also claimed he would have voted “yes” if his vote was the difference between a so-called “default” or not but Fetterman wanted to be on record as pressuring Biden to not even talk to Republicans on the next government funding go-round.
“As I communicated to leadership and the White House, I would have voted to avoid default if it would have made the difference,” Fetterman added. “All in all, this was a tough vote and an ugly situation manufactured by extortionists. While we avoided a catastrophe this time around, we should never put the country in this situation again.”
Finally, Fetterman repeated his demand that Joe Biden unconstitutionally raise the debt ceiling through executive fiat using the 14th Amendment.
“While we avoided a catastrophe this time around, we should never put the country in this situation again. The 14th Amendment is right there.”
John Fetterman ranting about the debt ceiling deal comes at the same time the Biden team is laughing at RINOs like Kevin McCarthy about how easily they rolled them in the debt ceiling negotiations.
The New York Times reported:
In pursuit of an agreement, the Biden team was willing to give Republicans victory after victory on political talking points, which they realized Mr. McCarthy needed to sell the bill to his conference.
And despite McCarthy’s boasting the GOP secured next to nothing and did not roll back one Joe Biden agenda item.
McCarthy came to the table after passing a bill that slashed $4.8 trillion in spending while lifting the debt ceiling by $1.4 trillion.
McCarthy walked away agreeing to a deal that allows Biden to run up at least $4 trillion in new debt with no guaranteed spending cuts.
