Joe Biden’s presidency is not off to a fast start.
There is more bad news on the way.
And Joe Biden received one letter that left him wondering how it all went wrong.
Joe Biden nominated former Hillary Clinton confidante and left-wing activist Neera Tanden to serve as Director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Tanden’s controversial past where she accused Republicans of being Russian collaborators and other outrageous statements rose the temperature surrounding the opposition in the Senate towards Tanden’s confirmation.
But what also galvanized opposition to Tanden was the fact that she once outed an accuser that made sexual harassment claims when Tanden ran the Center for American Progress and the incident where Tanden allegedly punched a reporter.
West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin announced he would oppose Tanden’s nomination putting her confirmation in peril as now a Republican would have to cross the aisle and vote for Tanden.
The lone Republican considering voting for Tanden was Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski.
Murkowski appeared to be trying to cut a deal with Biden where Murkowski would vote for Tanden in exchange for some kind of policy payoff.
But before Murkowski could even say which way she would vote, Tanden wrote a letter to Joe Biden announcing she would pull herself from consideration for the Office of Management and Budget job.
Tanden’s letter read:
I am writing to you to withdraw my nomination for Director of the Office of Management and Budget. It has been an honor of a lifetime to be considered for this role and for the faith placed in me. I appreciate how hard you and your team at the White House has worked to win my confirmation. Unfortunately, it now seems clear that there is no path forward to gain confirmation, and I do not want continued consideration of my nomination to be a distraction from your other priorities.I am incredibly grateful for your leadership on behalf of the American people and for your agenda that will make such a transformative difference in people’s lives.
The most interesting thing to many Washington observers is that it appears that Democrats sunk Tanden’s nomination.
Democrats Bernie Sanders and Kyrsten Sinema were the only two Democrats who did make their intentions known.
But one or both had to privately communicate with the Biden team that they would not support Tanden for Tanden to write this letter.
Sinema is trying to fashion herself as a moderate for when she runs for re-election in Arizona and Sanders has a history with Tanden as leaked emails in 2016 showed Tanden was one of the establishment Democrats working to kill Sanders’ presidential campaign.
If Biden is aware of what is going on, he must be asking how his own staff recommended sending up a nominee that his own party could not support.
