Donald Trump got some news about reinstatement that Trump and his supporters were waiting on.
Everyone immediately wanted to know how Joe Biden would react.
And then Jen Psaki let something slip about Donald Trump that infuriated Democrats.
Facebook Vice President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg announced that the platform would lift its suspension of Donald Trump’s account on January 7, 2023—two years to the day from when Facebook censored his page.
Psaki restated the administration’s support for social media companies censoring so-called “misinformation.”
“Our view continues to be, though, that every platform, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, any other platform that is disseminating information to millions of Americans has a responsibility to crack down on disinformation,” Psaki stated.
Even this demand is dangerous.
For over a year Facebook censored posts as “misinformation” if they expressed support for the idea that the coronavirus outbreak began with an accidental lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
What the censors claimed was “misinformation” in 2020 now looks like a likely explanation.
Psaki added that Trump deserved to be banned from Facebook because of his previous posts.
“I think as we look at it, we learned a lot from President Trump, the former president, over the last couple of years about his behavior and how he uses these platforms,” Psaki continued.
Facebook claimed that Trump incited the events of January 6 and deserved the maximum suspension allowable.
“Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols,” Facebook’s Clegg wrote.
Facebook also warned that under the new policies, Trump—as well as other politicians—would be subject to the same rules as ordinary users.
That meant Facebook could censor Trump merely for posting conservative speech by claiming it was “incitement.”
Psaki expressed satisfaction with this policy believing that Trump would be permanently banned from Facebook before he could get a 2024 presidential campaign off the ground.
“Feels pretty unlikely that the zebra’s gonna change his stripes over the next two years,” Psaki added. “We’ll see.”
Joe Biden supports reforming Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act to allow for social media companies to more easily censor content liberals don’t like.
Biden and his allies believe if social media companies continue to clamp down on conservatives’ ability to speak online it will boost the Democrats’ chances of retaining their majorities in the 2022 election.
Republicans believe that’s what this whole “misinformation” crackdown on social media is all about.
Big Tech companies never crackdown on left-wing lies or conspiracy theories like the Russian collusion hoax.
Instead, the tech censors focus on narratives and speech that damage the left and make sure that gets pulled off the internet.
