Jeff Sessions has some bad news for Donald Trump.
Sessions appears to be looking for payback against President Trump.
And that happened when Jeff Sessions just sold out Donald Trump with this ugly betrayal.
The reports that the Justice Department subpoenaed metadata from Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee in 2018 as part of leak investigations whipped Washington up into a frenzy.
“News broke Thursday evening that prosecutors had subpoenaed Apple for data from the accounts of Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, along with their staff and family members, as part of a leak investigation. On Friday, Apple said the Justice Department had demanded metadata on 73 phone numbers and 36 email addresses in February 2018 as part of its investigation,” CNN reported.
The corporate media immediately turned their attention to Trump’s former Attorneys General Jeff Sessions and William Barr to paint them as fascist “yes men” spying on innocent Democrats like House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff.
But there was a major problem.
Neither Sessions nor Barr knew anything about these subpoenas.
However, the two responded to media inquiries in diametrically opposite manners.
A “source familiar with the matter”—critics contend in media speak that means Jeff Sessions—told The Daily Beast that while Sessions had no knowledge of the leak probes, seizing Democrats’ phone and email records sounded like something Trump would order.
The Daily Beast reported:
“[What’s been reported] is explicitly the kind of thing that Donald Trump would often say he wanted out of his Justice Department,” said the individual familiar with the matter. “But right now, it’s unclear how many top officials [at the time] even knew about this.”
The implication was clear.
Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe in 2017 and the “source” made it sound like Trump pressured Sessions’ replacement Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to spy on Democrats trying to frame Trump for colluding with the Russians.
By contrast, William Barr told POLITICO that Trump never insisted he investigate Democrats and that Trump was never briefed on such a probe.
Barr said that while he was attorney general, he was “not aware of any congressman’s records being sought in a leak case.” He added that Trump never encouraged him to zero in on the Democratic lawmakers who reportedly became targets of the former president’s push to unmask leakers of classified information.
Trump “was not aware of who we were looking at in any of the cases,” Barr said. “I never discussed the leak cases with Trump. He didn’t really ask me any of the specifics.”
Donald Trump fired Sessions after the 2018 midterm elections believing Sessions’ recusal paved the way for the Mueller witch hunt.
Sessions could be looking for a little payback for Trump ending Sessions’ career by either leaking himself—or authorizing a leak—to The Daily Beast to make it look like Trump was guilty without actually accusing Trump directly.
