Fox News never gave a straight answer to viewers as to why the network sent Tucker Carlson packing.
It looks like there is a very good reason Fox News Channel management did not want to be open and transparent about this decision.
And Fox News caved in and fired Tucker Carlson over this legal ultimatum.
A member of the Fox News board of directors reportedly told Carlson the network fired him as one of the demands from Dominion Voting Systems’ agreement to settle a defamation lawsuit against Fox.
Dominion sued Fox over hosts airing claims by Donald Trump’s lawyers that the company’s voting machines altered the tally in the 2020 election.
Even though Carlson was not a big part of this lawsuit the board member told Carlson the lawsuit was about punishing Fox News and one of Dominion’s conditions was that Fox fire its most popular host.
Variety reports:
The unnamed board member told Carlson that the condition does not appear in any of the settlement’s documents, and instead was a verbal agreement. If Fox didn’t comply, the settlement was off, Carlson was told. Dominion had plenty of leverage given that the $787.5 million deal to settle Dominion’s defamation suit against the network wouldn’t officially close until late-May…
… But Dominion was looking for the best way to maim the conservative news network, and forcing Fox News to cut ties with the most-watched personality in cable news would deal a potentially insurmountable blow and lead to a viewer exodus, according to Carlson’s understanding.
“That condition was intended to hurt Fox, and Tucker is just collateral damage,” says a source familiar with the matter. “Dominion wanted to punish Fox, and it’s working.”
Dominion supposedly got their wish and Fox News is suffering.
Outside of “The Five,” ratings for primetime programming cratered as no show that airs between the hours of 8 and 11 p.m. can draw more than 2 million viewers.
And the audience in Carlson’s old time slot plunged nearly 60 percent.
For its part, Dominion denied playing a role in Carlson’s firing.
“As the Fox principals who negotiated the settlement well know, Dominion made no demands about Tucker Carlson’s employment orally or in writing,” Dominion’s statement declared. “Any claims otherwise are categorically false and a thinly veiled effort to further damage Dominion. Fox should take every effort to stop these lies immediately.”
Fox News Channel has not come out and explained why it fired Carlson.
Two corporate media outlets — Axios and Variety — both say Fox News fired Carlson after Dominion demanded Carlson’s ouster as part of their pound of flesh to accept a settlement and spare Fox News an embarrassing trial.
And until Fox News comes clean about why it fired its number-one host speculation will continue to fill the void.
