The world sits on the cusp of a global crisis.
Russian President Vladimir Putin threatens to invade Ukraine.
And Fox News called out Bill Clinton for this huge mistake that could cause war with Russia.
When Bill Clinton was president, the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia struck a deal with Ukraine to dismantle the nation’s 176 nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees.
Fox News Channel’s “The Five” co-host Jesse Watters explained that agreement left Ukraine powerless to ward off a Russian invasion as no country would invade a nuclear-armed power.
“How did we get here? Bill Clinton forced the Ukrainians in the early 1990s to give their nukes back to Russia,” Watters stated. “If he had just let the Ukrainians keep the nukes, Russia wouldn’t have gone in — You don’t invade a nuclear power.
“So, I expect a formal apology by Bubba,” Watters concluded.
Putin took another step closer to war by recognizing breakaway Soviet separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
The pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk broke away from Ukraine eight years ago.
But Putin ordering military forces in those regions looked like the first steps in a full-scale Russian invasion to seize the rest of Ukraine.
In announcing Russia officially recognized the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, Putin sounded the most threatening notes since the end of the Cold War that World War Three could break out at any moment.
“Contemporary Ukraine should be called The Vladimir I. Lenin Republic of Ukraine. And then they tore down his statues and called it de-communization. You want decommunization? We’re prepared to show you what that really means for Ukraine,” Putin stated.
Putin then claimed NATO expansion into Ukraine threatened Russian national security.
“Ukraine joining NATO is a direct threat to Russia,” Putin added. “Why are you trying to make Russia into an enemy?”
There have been multiple wars in Europe since the end of World War Two.
But none threatened to potentially lead to catastrophe like a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
No one knows how this crisis will play out.
Putin’s speech alarmed many observers that figured Putin would conduct himself as a rational actor.
That idea is now in doubt.
A Russian invasion of Ukraine would lead to a bloody conflict with mass casualties and the potential to suck the United States into a conflict that could end with the exchange of nuclear weapons.
This crisis is the biggest threat to peace and stability since the end of the Cold War.
And many critics – like Jesse Watters – point back to Bill Clinton’s decision to bargain away Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal as the first step on the road to war.
