Nancy Pelosi got some bad news.
The speaker of the House thought she had the perfect set-up.
But then Pelosi found out Devin Nunes is about to get a promotion that upset everything Nancy Pelosi planned.
Senate Republicans filibustered a Democrat Party bill to create an independent commission to investigate the events of January 6.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell blasted the commission as an attempt by the Democrats to get Republicans to vote for an investigation Democrats would turn around and use as political fodder to attack Donald Trump and the GOP as the party of insurrection and sedition.
But Pelosi won’t let go of what she believes is her most politically potent line of attack.
Pelosi announced the House of Representatives would vote on legislation to create a select committee to probe what happened on January 6.
“January 6th was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history,” Pelosi stated. “It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day and ensure such an attack cannot again happen. The Select Committee will investigate and report upon the facts and causes of the attack and report recommendations for preventing any future assault.”
Since this select panel is a House-only matter it does not require a Senate vote.
Pelosi’s announced the committee will consist of 13 members—eight selected by Pelosi and five more chosen in consultation with the minority.
House Republicans believe this is an obvious set-up and are planning to nominate take-no-prisoner political brawlers like Devin Nunes to fill out the party’s choices for the select committee.
“If Speaker Pelosi wants to make her January 6 commission a partisan affair, then Democrats should expect Republicans to put forward aggressive members to push back on the Left’s falsehoods,” an aide close to House GOP leadership told Breitbart.
From 2017 to 2019 Nunes used his perch as the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee to expose the Russian collusion and Ukraine quid pro quo hoaxes the Democrats tried to foist on the country.
House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries of New York put the Democrats’ cards on the table as to how the party would use the committee to attack Republicans.
Jeffries declared the select committee would call House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as a witness to try and embarrass him over his conversations with Donald Trump on January 6.
“It’s my expectation that whoever winds up chairing the select committee will pursue all available angles in terms of individuals that will be called before the committee to testify and I think that Leader McCarthy has indicated that he’s willing to testify and share the contents of that conversation,” Jeffries exclaimed.
Nancy Pelosi dropped enough breadcrumbs to indicate the January 6 select committee would serve as a political club for Democrats to beat Republicans with.
And that’s why Republican leaders in the House are responding by floating the idea of nominating Devin Nunes to the committee.
