Democrats in Congress are already overreaching.
But their latest power play could come back to haunt them.
And now Democrats have one vote which may lead to expelling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from Congress.
Democrats presented Republicans with an ultimatum—expel Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee assignments or the Democrat majority would take matters into their own hands and introduce a resolution to oust her from the education and budget committees.
Greene is an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump and Democrats want revenge after she introduced articles of impeachment on Biden’s first day in office.
However, Democrats may not be fully accounting for the consequences of one political party telling the other party how they can dole out committee assignments.
Greene warned Democrats that Republicans will win back the majority in the 2022 midterms and that once in the minority beginning in 2023, the GOP would then introduce a series of resolutions to kick controversial Democrats off their committees.
“If Democrats remove me from my committees, I can assure them that the precedent they are setting will be used extensively against members on their side once we regain the majority after the 2022 elections. And we will regain the majority, make no mistake about that,” Greene wrote on social media.
Being removed from committee assignments is seen as a death sentence in Washington as it removes one ability of a member to provide constituent services which are often the key to their re-election prospects.
Democrats do not have to look far to see how the majority party punishing a member of the minority will come back to bite them.
Texas Congressman Chip Roy and over 10 of his colleagues wrote a letter demanding Nancy Pelosi force Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to apologize for her outrageous comment that Texas Senator Ted Cruz tried to have her killed by filing a lawful objection to the results of the Electoral College in Arizona.
“I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue where there’s common ground, but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago so you can sit this one out,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on Twitter. “Happy to work w/ almost any other GOP that aren’t trying to get me killed. In the meantime if you want to help, you can resign.
“You haven’t even apologized for the serious physical + mental harm you contributed to from Capitol Police & custodial workers to your own fellow members of Congress. In the meantime, you can get off my timeline & stop clout-chasing. Thanks,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
If Republicans win the majority in 2022 it would not be at all surprising if they retaliate against the Democrats by voting to strip Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of her committee assignments for trying to incite violence against Cruz with her baseless claim of attempted murder.
