Frustration is boiling over for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
That led to one of the biggest mistakes of the 2024 campaign.
And Ron DeSantis said two words about Trump supporters that instantly landed him in deep trouble.
In an interview with the Florida Standard, Governor DeSantis discussed the state of the race and Donald Trump’s dominance over the Republican Party.
DeSantis is in the middle of the third reshuffling of his campaign as some polls show him falling into this place and the Florida governor wanted conservatives to know he is the America First conservative that could deliver results.
However, when DeSantis sought to compare himself to Donald Trump, DeSantis stepped into some thorny territory by calling the Trump movement “listless vessels” who worship at the altar of Donald Trump’s cult of personality.
“If all we are is listless vessels that are just supposed to follow, you know, whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning, that’s not going to be a durable movement,” DeSantis stated.
DeSantis lamented the fact that in his view, some Trump supporters didn’t look at issues but viewed everything through a prism of loyalty to Donald Trump.
“And so you could be the most conservative person since sliced bread. Unless you’re kissing his rear end, they will somehow call you a RINO. So it’s been totally detached from principle in what you actually believe and results. And it’s more about, you know, just what faction you happen to do,” DeSantis added.
DeSantis claimed the MAGA movement is “detached from any type of substance” and is just full of lemmings who follow Donald Trump blindly.
“It’s just been totally detached from any type of substance. And ultimately, a movement can’t be about the personality of one individual. The movement has got to be about what are you trying to achieve on behalf of the American people,” DeSantis continued.
DeSantis also laced into some congressional Republicans who backed Trump over him.
“There will be people who are huge Trump supporters like in Congress who have, like, incredibly liberal left-wing records that’s really just atrocious and yet they’re viewed by some of these folks as, like, really, really good. Then you have other people, you know, like a Congressman Chip Roy who’s endorsed me, Congressman Thomas Massie,” he said.
The Trump campaign fired back ripping DeSantis for copying Hillary Clinton’s insult of Trump voters being “deplorables.”
“To Hillary Clinton, Trump supporters are ‘deplorables.’ To Ron DeSantis, they are ‘listless vessels.’ The truth is, Trump supporters are patriots,” Make America Great Again Inc. spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stated.
“Ron DeSantis is showing his true colors. The pressure of polling in third place is getting to DeSantis and now he is lashing out at the very same voters who got him elected Governor. DeSantis must immediately apologize for his disgraceful insult,” Leavitt added.
The DeSantis campaign shot back claiming DeSantis was referring in the main to some members of Congress who endorsed Donald Trump.
“The dishonest media refuses to report the facts—Donald Trump and some congressional endorsers are ‘listless vessels.’ Why? Because Trump and DC insiders feel he is entitled to your vote. (DeSantis) believes your trust should be earned and has the vision, plan, and record to beat Joe Biden and reverse the decline of our country. That’s why Ron DeSantis will be showing up on Wednesday night to debate, and Donald Trump will not,” spokesman Bryan Griffin declared.
This controversy comes at a time when DeSantis’s poll numbers keep declining and he’s struggling to raise money both from the establishment donor class and grassroots conservatives.
And no matter what DeSantis meant by his words or how people interpret them this is another news cycle where the story is the turmoil surrounding the DeSantis campaign as opposed to communicating his message to the voters.
