Nancy Pelosi set up the January 6 committee as the third impeachment of Donald Trump.
Democrats and their allies in the corporate media were confident the committee would bring down Trump once and for all.
But now CNN just got a reality check about Donald Trump that Democrats are going to hate.
The January 6 committee had two goals that none of the members or the media tried to hide.
One goal was to establish a political narrative of the Republican Party as a grave threat to American democracy that Democrats could campaign on in a last-ditch effort to reverse the party’s sagging political fortunes in November’s midterm election.
The second – and more important goal – was to create a tidal wave of momentum to force the Department of Justice to indict Donald Trump and block Trump from running for re-election in two years.
With Joe Biden’s approval ratings slipping into the 30s and Kamala Harris considered a national punchline Democrats do not have a candidate that can win in 2024.
But the committee failed in all its goals.
CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin admitted it would be nearly impossible to charge Donald Trump with a crime related to January 6.
“I just think as a matter of prosecutorial discretion, you can’t charge the President of the United States with trying to overturn an election where he is acting in public, where he has a constitutional authority to tell Mike Pence what to do,” Toobin stated.
Toobin added that all the supposed “evidence” against Trump was nothing more than speculation and hearsay.
“We can have these interesting discussions about what’s a good case to bring, but mostly what we need are facts,” Toobin added. “Like, what happened? We still don’t know exactly what happened. And mostly what we don’t know is what was Donald Trump’s state of mind? Was he really encouraging violence? You know, what were his conversations? There was an allusion early in the hearing to Trump saying, you know, hang Mike Pence, that’s a good idea, he deserves it. But we only heard that secondhand.”
And if Democrats hoped the hearings would reset the contours of the midterm election they were sadly mistaken.
The January 6 committee announced their hearings with a massive public relations blitz.
Initially the committee planned to hold eight hearings primetime and hired a former ABC News producer to stage a made-for-TV Hollywood production.
But after the ratings for the first hearing came in lower than expected and polls show no one cared the committee cut back the number of hearings to five and held the remaining proceedings during the daytime when they would be easily ignored by the American people.
