Democrats got thrown for a loop.
One of the left’s most carefully crafted plans just imploded.
Chuck Schumer just suffered a huge defeat that forced this huge concession.
Democrats are using a $3.5 trillion spending bill as a catch-all to enact every socialist wish list policy under the sun.
One provision would throw 59 million Americans that work as freelancers and independent contractors out of a job.
But the most controversial scheme was Democrats attempting to jam a provision granting as many as ten million illegal aliens amnesty.
But since Democrats utilized the budget reconciliation process to avoid a GOP filibuster and pass the spending bill with just 51 votes, the Senate parliamentarian had to rule on every aspect of the bill to make sure it satisfied the Byrd Rule that mandated all provisions in a reconciliation bill have a substantial impact on the federal budget.
Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled against the amnesty provision writing that it “is by any standard a broad, new immigration policy.”
MacDonough noted that granting amnesty to up to 10 million illegal aliens would balloon the federal deficit by $140 billion over the next ten years, and that number was just incidental to the policy.
“Many undocumented persons live and work in the shadows of our society out of fear of deportation,” MacDonough also wrote that amnesty allows illegal aliens “freedom to work, freedom to travel, freedom to live openly in our society in any state in the nation, and to reunite with their families and it would make them eligible, in time, to apply for citizenship — things for which there is no federal fiscal equivalent.”
MacDonough added that amnesty“is [a] tremendous and enduring policy change that dwarfs its budgetary impact.”
Schumer bemoaned the adverse ruling, but vowed to press forward on an amnesty scheme.
“We are deeply disappointed in this decision but the fight to provide lawful status for immigrants in budget reconciliation continues. We will continue fighting to pursue the best path forward to grant them the ability to obtain lawful status,” Schumer wrote on social media.
But Schumer’s words were empty.
Democrats could overrule the parliamentarian and force the amnesty scheme into the reconciliation bill.
But Senate Democrats admitted they would not deploy that nuclear option.
That means – for now – the left’s mass amnesty scheme appears dead.
Conservatives breathed a sigh of relief as Democrats planned to use amnesty to create a new electorate by granting citizenship – and voting – rights to millions of illegal aliens in the largest amnesty scheme in American history.
The parliamentarian ruling against amnesty also ramped up pressure in the Democrats’ internal civil war because socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be less likely to accept the smaller reconciliation bill that senators like Joe Manchin are pushing for without amnesty.
And that could imperil Joe Biden’s entire legislative agenda.
