Chuck Schumer is feeling the heat.
Democrats suffered a massive defeat that has the rank-and-file up in arms.
And Chuck Schumer is facing this ultimatum that could end his time in the Senate.
The Senate parliamentarian ruled increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour violated the Byrd Rule that prevents any provision that doesn’t directly affect the budget from being included in legislation from being passed through the reconciliation process.
Democrats can only pass Joe Biden’s two trillion dollar bailout bill via reconciliation in the Senate because they are facing unified Republican opposition.
Knowing the base would be furious that he failed to deliver,Chuck Schumer expressed his disappointment at this massive setback.
“We are not going to give up the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 to help millions of struggling American workers and their families,” Schumer stated. “The American people deserve it, and we are committed to making it a reality.”
Democrats made $15 an hour minimum wage a centerpiece promise during the 2020 campaign and elected officials knew they had to come up with another way to deliver.
“Do we have a plan if she rules that it’s not allowable?” Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy explained. “The answer is no. We have to come back to the discussions in the caucus about how to proceed.”
Democrat voters circulated memes on social media mocking Biden for not winning passage of $2,000 stimulus checks or raising the minimum wage in the Senate, but having the time to illegally bomb Syria.
That led to Democrat senators raising the prospect of gutting the filibuster to win passage of increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour.
“We need to pass a $15 an hour minimum wage,” Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren added in expressing her support for eliminating the filibuster. “If we can do it through reconciliation, great. If we can’t, then we need to tackle the filibuster issue and then pass minimum wage.”
Virginia Senator and failed 2016 vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine declared the Democrats would find some avenue toward increasing the minimum wage.
“There’s a million angles to it,” Senator Kaine continued, “Even though there’s some differences about how much, and how fast, what are the exceptions, it’s such a unifier in our caucus. We’ll figure out a way to get it done. I’m pretty confident about that.”
Republicans will unanimously oppose the Democrats’ minimum wage scheme because it will kill jobs.
A Congressional Budget Office report found raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would raise just 900,000 Americans out of poverty while killing 1.4 million jobs.
Facts may not matter in this debate.
Chuck Schumer is facing the prospect of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mounting a 2022 primary campaign.
If Schumer does not ram the socialist agenda through the Senate, Ocasio-Cortez may sense an opening and primary Schumer.
And if that happens, it could spell the end of Schumer’s career.
Ocasio-Cortez entered Congress by defeating the fourth ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives so she is no stranger to winning races against entrenched party big wigs.
