Democrats never saw it coming.
With just days remaining in President Trump’s term in office, Democrats thought they were on a massive winning streak.
But Chuck Schumer got hit with some bad news that took him by surprise.
Democrats control 50 seats in the United States Senate.
Vice President Kamala Harris could cast a tie-breaking 51st vote.
That power dynamic looms large as talk once again floats around Washington that the Democrats may eliminate the Senate filibuster to allow them to pass legislation with a simple majority vote.
That would allow Democrats to grant amnesty to 20 million illegal aliens, add new states, ban and confiscate firearms, impose the Marxist Green New Deal and ram through a government takeover of healthcare.
To do that Democrats need to keep a 100 percent unified caucus.
West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin—who critics accuse of being the most dishonest Senator in Washington—appeared on Fox News and claimed he was still against eliminating the filibuster and court-packing.
“It’s all the same. Nothing’s changed,” Manchin responded when Fox News host Bret Baier asked him if he still opposed packing the Supreme Court and eliminating the filibuster.
To get a sense of how slippery Manchin really is, on his next answer Manchin left open the possibility of voting to add Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. as new states and creating four new permanent Democrat Senate seats.
“I’m happy to look at all of these issues, but I’ve said what I’ve said on the others,” Manchin stated.
Trump supporters have no reason to trust Joe Manchin.
Back in 2010, Manchin survived the Tea Party wave that handed Barack Obama a historic defeat by claiming he would always support Second Amendment rights.
That turned out to be a lie.
In 2013, Manchin authored the National Gun Registration Database bill that Obama demanded Congress pass following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
That effort ended in defeat, but it proved that Manchin was someone who could not be counted on to keep their word.
Some Republicans looked warily on Manchin saying he would oppose getting rid of the filibuster.
It’s easy to say that now.
But when Democrats have a long sought-after policy goal they’ve fought for years for like a government takeover of healthcare, or amnesty for illegal aliens, will Manchin truly stick to his word, or will he hold out to make a deal before folding under pressure?
Given Manchin’s track record in the Senate the latter seems very likely.
Trump supporters are entering an uncertain time.
Big Tech and corporate America are lining up to crush them with bans and workplace political litmus tests.
And now they worry that Democrats will be able to remake the country overnight with one simple rule change.
