Chuck Schumer got some bad news.
It came from both his left and right.
And now Chuck Schumer got crushed by one demand that had Democrats ready to abandon him.
Democrats claim that unless Congress adds trillions of new dollars to the national debt by raising the debt ceiling, the economy will tank and millions of Americans will instantly lose their jobs.
These are the scare tactics big government politicians routinely engage in so they can bankrupt future generations by avoiding having to level with the American people about how high they will have to raise taxes to fund socialist welfare programs.
But now Democrats find themselves backed into a corner.
Democrats want to pass a $3.5 trillion spending bill that will impose the Green New Deal and create new socialist welfare entitlement programs.
Chuck Schumer plans to jam this bill through the Senate using the budget reconciliation process since it circumvents a GOP filibuster and only requires 51 votes.
At the same time, Schumer is trying to get Republicans to suspend the debt ceiling until after the 2022 midterms.
Republicans balked and said since the Democrats want to pass trillions in new spending with just Democrat votes, they can add trillions in new debt with only Democrat votes.
Democrats need Republican votes because if they raise the debt ceiling through reconciliation they must raise it by a specific number which Democrats fear opens them up to attack ads blasting them for adding however many trillions of dollars to the debt that Democrats pick.
Republicans did offer Democrats a way out.
Maine Never Trump RINO Susan Collins floated the idea that if Democrats wanted Republican votes to raise the debt ceiling Democrats abandon their $3.5 trillion socialist bill as part of the trade.
Collins told reporters that “some Republicans would vote to raise the debt limit if they knew the Democrats were going to abandon the $3.5 trillion package, which appears unlikely, but that’s an agreement that could be reached.”
That put Democrats on the spot.
Chuck Schumer claims Democrats do not have time to raise the debt ceiling through reconciliation before the government allegedly runs out of money on October 18.
Joe Biden described defaulting on the debt as a “meteor” barreling towards the economy.
If those things were true, then Democrats should have no problem punting on a bill that could turn America into a socialist nation to stave off economic calamity.
Instead, faced with the choice, West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin gave the game away by breaking with Schumer and saying Democrats could raise the debt ceiling through reconciliation.
“Forget the filibuster … We can prevent default, we really can prevent it. And there’s a way to do that, and there’s a couple other tools we have … Takes a little bit of time, it’s gonna be a little bit of pain, long vote-a-ramas,”Manchin told reporters.
In politics, the side that stays untied wins the fight.
And in this case, Democrats are already breaking ranks with Chuck Schumer.
