Some states are conducting forensic audits of the 2020 vote.
Donald Trump is reportedly paying close attention to this effort.
And all hell broke loose with this key state’s decision about auditing the 2020 vote.
The initial count was certified by the state and accepted by a vote in Congress on January 6.
But after Arizona State Senate Republicans began auditing the vote in Maricopa County, Donald Trump began prodding other states to audit their 2020 vote totals.
Pennsylvania was one such state that Trump targeted.
Some Pennsylvania state lawmakers traveled out to Arizona to observe the Maricopa County audit.
Trump demanded they follow the state of Arizona’s lead.
“The people of Pennsylvania and America deserve to know the truth,” a statement from Trump read. “If the Pennsylvania Senate leadership doesn’t act, there is no way they will ever get re-elected!”
To be clear, any audit of the vote cannot change the result of the 2020 election.
Donald Trump cannot be reinstated as president.
Trump’s only opportunity to once again become president is running in the 2024 election and winning.
That’s why some Pennsylvania Republicans dismiss the idea of auditing the 2020 vote because it is backward-looking.
“The PA House of Representatives will not be authorizing any further audits on any previous election,” House State Government Committee Chair Seth Grove posted on social media. “We are focused on fixing our broken election law to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
Other Pennsylvania Republicans cite polling data showing many Americans don’t trust that elections are free and fair so an audit is a way to dispel those doubts.
“Forty-seven percent of the people in this country don’t have faith in the electoral – electoral integrity right now,” Pennsylvania State Senator Cris Dush said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “And my constituents are very much up in arms, with the lack of any movement on trying to find out what happened.”
Pennsylvania State Representative Doug Mastriano was one of Trump’s biggest supporterswho also believed the election in Pennsylvania contained elements of fraud and stated that he did not intendfor an audit to overturn the results in the commonwealth.
Mastriano cast an audit as a means of improving elections going forward.
“I’m just trying to find out what went right, what went wrong?” Mastriano explained. “And how do we have better elections in the future?”
None of these audits can alter the outcome of the 2020 election.
Donald Trump will not be president in August.
But so few Americans have trust in elections because media outlets that state 2020 was the most secure election in history were also the same ones ignoring the coronavirus lab leak origin story, and pushing Russian collusion and Russian bounty conspiracy theories.
Some of these citizens now think an audit of the vote is the only way they can know for sure what happened in the 2020 election.
However, other Republicans believe the party would be best served looking forward to the 2022 and 2024 elections.
