Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez inserted herself into the middle of the biggest fight going on in Washington.
All hell is about to break loose.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hit Kevin McCarthy with this wicked curveball.
Joe Biden continues to demand Republicans raise the debt ceiling and finance trillions in debt Biden racked up through his socialist spending agenda.
America is already over $31 trillion in debt and Biden is refusing to slash spending and set America’s fiscal house in order.
Republicans passed a bill that cut $4.8 trillion in spending in exchange for a modest $1.5 trillion debt ceiling increase which means that Republicans cut three dollars in spending for every dollar of debt, a trajectory that would restore sanity to America’s financial books.
But now House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is going wobbly in the face of the Democrats’ pressure.
Republicans hold 222 seats in the House.
If McCarthy negotiates with Biden and caves in to Biden’s demands to preserve the socialist spending levels of last year then Republicans will defect.
Establishment Republicans like McCarthy also buy into the Democrats’ psyops that not raising the debt ceiling will plunge the world into a global depression.
In reality, the government will just have to prioritize paying its bills and not run new debt.
But in a press conference Ocasio-Cortez claimed that if McCarthy needs Democrat votes to raise the debt ceiling he should abandon any demands to cut spending.
“The reason why anyone is asking anyone on this stage about what we would vote for is because Kevin McCarthy needs our votes, because Kevin McCarthy doesn’t have the votes,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters. “Because Kevin McCarthy is going to the White House without a majority of his caucus. He does not have what is necessary to negotiate, and for any, any question about what anybody would settle for, he has responsibility to concede.”
“If he wants any Democratic support, he has to come to the table, and we have seen him over and over again say that he will not negotiate, that they are engaged in hostage taking, not negotiation. Extortion, not conversation,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
Republicans settled on a compromise.
That was a small debt ceiling increase in exchange for trillions in spending cuts and structural reforms to end the river of red ink the government runs.
And Republicans in both the House and Senate made it clear they would not accept any debt ceiling surrender.
“I think if the speaker negotiates that with the President, the speaker will find out there’s a lot of Republicans who won’t be agreeing with the speaker,” Florida Congressman Byron Donalds stated.
“That doesn’t sound like a deal that I can support,” Conservative Texas Congressman Chip Roy added.
Utah Senator Mike Lee declared that he would use every procedural tool at his disposal – and there are many – to slow down and defeat a cave-in on raising the debt ceiling.
“I will use every procedural tool at my disposal to impede a debt-ceiling deal that doesn’t contain substantial spending and budgetary reforms. I fear things are moving in that direction. If they do, that proposal will not face smooth sailing in the Senate,” Senator Lee wrote on Twitter.
Ocasio-Cortez and Biden are trying to scare Republicans into folding on their demands for trillions in spending cuts to begin to get the $31 trillion debt under control.
Will McCarthy blink? Or will he stand strong?
