A top Democrat is going to prison for a serious offense.
For many years he’s been undermining America’s democracy.
A top Democrat just got convicted for a shocking election fraud crime.
A former Pennsylvania congressman has been sentenced to over two years in jail for committing election fraud designed to help Democratic candidates.
Former Rep. Michael “Ozzie” Myers pleaded guilty to frequently stuffing ballots, conspiring to illegally vote in a federal election and deprive civil rights, voting records falsification, and bribery in favor of Democratic candidates, according to a Department of Justice press release.
The DOJ said that the schemes were carried out during the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 elections.
Myers has been sentenced to 30 months in prison with three years of supervised release for his crimes and was ordered to pay $100,000 in fines, with $10,000 of that due immediately.
“Protecting the legitimacy of elections is critical to ensuring the public’s trust in the process,” FBI Philadelphia Division Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire said in a press release last week. “Through his actions, Ozzie Myers pointedly disdained both the will of Philadelphia voters and the rule of law. He’s now a federal felon twice over, heading back behind bars, with time to consider the great consequence of free and fair elections.”
The DOJ highlighted the fact that Myers confessed in court that he bribed a Judge of Elections, Domenick J. Demuro, to stuff ballots for Democratic candidates. Demuro pleaded guilty in May 2020.
“Myers admitted to bribing Demuro to illegally add votes for certain candidates of their mutual political party in primary elections. Some of these candidates were individuals running for judicial office whose campaigns had hired Myers, and others were candidates for various federal, state, and local elective offices that Myers favored for a variety of reasons. Myers would solicit payments from his clients in the form of cash or checks as ‘consulting fees,’ and then use portions of these funds to pay Demuro and others to tamper with election results,” the DOJ wrote in a press release about the case on June 6.
“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. If even one vote has been illegally cast or if the integrity of just one election official is compromised, it diminishes faith in process,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero. “This defendant used his position, knowledge of the process, and connections to fix elections for his preferred candidates, which demonstrates a truly flagrant disregard for the laws which govern our elections. He will now spend 30 months in prison as penalty for his crimes.”
Myers was expelled from Congress in 1980 after being caught as part of the ABSCAM investigation. He was convicted of bribery and conspiracy for taking money from FBI agents who posed as Arab sheiks and served a year in prison.
